Alzheimer's disease is a complicated, multifaceted, neurodegenerative illness that places an increasing strain on healthcare systems. Due to increasing malfunction and death of nerve cells, the person suffering from Alzheimer's disease (AD) slowly and steadily loses their memories, cognitive functions and even their personality. Although medications may temporarily enhance memory, there are currently no permanent therapies that can halt or cure this irreversible neurodegenerative process.

Objectives: This review examines how food additives impact the central nervous system (CNS) focusing on the effects of sugars, artificial sweeteners, colorings, and preservatives.
Methods: A literature search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted for studies published since 2010. Key search terms included, food additives, neurotoxicity, cognition, and behavior.

Following prolonged exposure to hypoxic conditions, for example, due to ascent to high altitude, aging or stroke, cognitive deficits can develop. The exact nature and genesis of hypoxia-induced cognitive deficits remain unresolved. Curcumin has been reported to stimulate neurogenesis and reduce neuronal degeneration.

Neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs) have been prevalent for more than a decade, and the number of individuals affected per year has increased exponentially. Among these NDDs, Alzheimer's disease, which causes extreme cognitive impairment, and Parkinson's disease, characterized by impairments in motor activity, are the most prevalent. While few treatments are available for clinical practice, they have minimal effects on reversing the neurodegeneration associated with these debilitating diseases.

Brain aging is a multifactorial process that includes a reduction in the biological and metabolic activity of individuals. Oxidative stress and inflammatory processes are characteristic of brain aging. Given the current problems, the need arises to implement new therapeutic approaches.
