AI Article Synopsis

  • - The Bruce protocol is a standard fitness test that has some limitations, like short duration and intense exertion, prompting researchers to develop a new treadmill protocol aimed at improving safety, comfort, and peak oxygen consumption (VO2max) during exercise.
  • - The study involved twenty-two elite Saudi athletes from triathlon and soccer, who underwent a modified treadmill test to evaluate their body composition and key cardiovascular metrics like VO2max and maximum heart rate (HR max) using specialized equipment.
  • - The findings suggest that achieving high VO2max levels can be challenging without also reaching high HR max values, which may pose cardiovascular risks; thus, the new protocol offers a safer and more comfortable option for both testing and training.

Article Abstract

Unlabelled: The Bruce protocol is the traditional method used to assess maximal fitness level, although it may have limitations, such as its short duration and large work rate increases, with very high levels of exertion that consist of speed/incline combinations. Modifications have been added to elicit similar maximal fitness achievements. The authors of this experimental trial have proposed a new treadmill protocol that allows optimal test duration in conjunction with peak oxygen consumption 'VO2max', and with appropriate patient comfort and safety during both exercise testing and training.

Subjects: Twenty-two elite Saudi players, comprising eleven Saudi triathlon athletes, and eleven Saudi elite soccer players, BMI, body fat mass percentage, body fat free mass percentage. cardiovascular parameter; including, absolute and relative "VO2max" as well as maximal heart rate "HR max", were assessed during a graded treadmill running modified protocol, using a Quark Cardio Pulmonary Exercise Testing Unit (CPET).

Results: Descriptive statistics were used to obtain the anthropometric characteristics, including comparisons between the means, independent sample -test and a regression analysis, to test the association of the protocol duration and the corresponding, dependent variables.

Conclusions Clinical Relevance: It is often difficult to achieve a high cardiorespiratory response, VO2max, without an association to high values of HR max, and peak perceived exertion. This may lead to cardiovascular risk. Our new modifications can provide a practical, valid alternative protocol to be used comfortably both during exercise testing and training, rather than performance testing only, to achieve high VO2max with minimal cardiovascular stress.

Background: Glucose transporter 1 deficiency syndrome (Glut1DS) was initially reported by De Vivo and colleagues in 1991. This disease arises from mutations in the SLC2A1 and presents with a broad clinical spectrum. It is a treatable neuro-metabolic condition, where prompt diagnosis and initiation of ketogenic dietary therapy can markedly enhance the prognosis.

Cholinergic urticaria (CholU) is characterized by itching and/or stinging, painful micro wheals due to systemic heating. There are two standardized protocols to diagnose CholU using an exercise bike with heart rate or warming passive. The objective is to provide an affordable, new, low-tech test to assist the diagnostic.

Objectives: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and prediabetes are associated with poor walking endurance, a marker of physical function. We aimed to examine the long-term effects of metformin or intensive lifestyle intervention in adults at high risk of T2D on their 6-min walk test (6MWT) performance.

Methods: Participants were randomized in the 3-year Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) to one of the three groups: lifestyle intervention, metformin, or placebo, and were subsequently followed in the DPP Outcomes Study.

Background: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) impairs exercise capacity after myocardial infarction (MI).

Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of SDB on the efficacy of post-MI cardiac rehabilitation (CR).

Methods: The study evaluated consecutive patients up to 28 days after MI who participated in outpatient CR as part of the Polish Managed Care after Acute Myocardial Infarction program.

Introduction And Objective: Surface electromyography (sEMG) measurements are a valid method for sublesional muscle activity following spinal cord injury (SCI). In the literature there are few reports evaluating the effect of robotic assisted gait training (RAGT) on the sEMG properties change in SCI patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of RAGT on observed change of sEMG, and in 64 incomplete SCI patients in the sub-acute stage in relation to functional scales.
