In this work, the two-stage cultivation of Chlorella sp. HS2 for enhancing the lipid productivity was optimized by adjusting the duration of nitrogen-replete (N+) and -deplete (N-) stages within a 9 day period using urea as nitrogen source. The highest lipid content of 36.7% and productivity of 216.9 mg L d were obtained under five days of N+ followed by four days of N- conditions. Replenishing phosphorus and other nutrients (N-P+O+) at the beginning of the nutrient-starvation resulted in 1.55 and 1.68-folds improvement in lipid productivities compared to the single stage and zero nutrient controls (N-P-O-), respectively. The estimated biodiesel properties based on the fatty acid profiles met all criteria of international standards. The findings of this study indicate that properly adjusting the period of nitrogen availability as well as the presence of other nutrients is highly important in order to maximize the biofuel productivity in two-stage microalgal cultivation.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are crucial in stress perception, the integration of environmental signals, and the activation of downstream response networks. This review emphasizes ROS-mediated signaling pathways in microalgae and presents an overview of strategies for leveraging ROS. Eight distinct signaling pathways mediated by ROS in microalgae have been summarized, including the calcium signaling pathway, the target of rapamycin signaling pathway, the mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway, the cyclic adenosine monophosphate/protein kinase A signaling pathway, the ubiquitin/protease pathway, the ROS-regulated transcription factors and enzymes, the endoplasmic reticulum stress, and the retrograde ROS signaling.

Improper treatment of livestock and poultry wastewater (LPWW) rich in ammonium nitrogen (NH-N) and antibiotics leads to eutrophication, and contributes to the risk of creating drug-resistant pathogens. The design-build-test-learn strategy was used to engineer a continuous process using Chlorella vulgaris to remove NH-N and antibiotics. The optimized system removed NH-N at a rate of 306 mg/L/d, degraded 99 % of lincomycin, and reduced the hydraulic retention time to 4 days.

Microalga presents a promising source of high-value food ingredients such as protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins. To fully unlock its potential, a thorough understanding of how cultivation conditions affect both growth and the nutritional composition is required. Hence, this study aimed to test and model the effects of temperature, light intensity, and salinity on biomass productivity and the final contents of protein, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and vitamin K using response surface methodology (RSM).
