Carbonic acid dimer, (CA), (HCO), helps to explain the existence of this acid as a stable species, different to a simple sum between carbon dioxide and water. Five distinct, well characterized types of intermolecular interactions contribute to the stabilization of the dimers, namely, C=O⋯H-O, H-O⋯H-O, C=O⋯C=O, C=O⋯O-H, and C-O⋯O-H. In many cases, the stabilizing hydrogen bonds are of at least the same strength as in the water dimer. We dissect the nature of intermolecular interactions and assess their influence on stability. For a set of 40 (HCO) isomers, C=O⋯H-O hydrogen bonds between the carbonyl oxygen in one CA molecule and the acidic hydrogen in the hydroxyl group at a second CA molecule are the major stabilizing factors because they exhibit the shortest interaction distances, the largest orbital interaction energies, and the largest accumulation of electron densities around the corresponding bond critical points. In most cases, these are closed-shell hydrogen bonds, however, in a few instances, some covalent character is induced. Bifurcated hydrogen bonds are a common occurrence in the dimers of carbonic acid, resulting in a complex picture with multiple orbital interactions of various strengths. Two anti-anti monomers interacting via the strongest C=O⋯H-O hydrogen bonds are the ingredients for the formation of the lowest energy dimers. To clarify the effect of the fluorine atom and piperazine ring on norfloxacin (NOR), NOR degradation products (NOR-DPs, P1-P8) were generated via UV combined with hydrogen peroxide (UV/HO) technology. NOR degradation did not significantly affect cytotoxicity of NOR against BV2, A549, HepG2, and Vero E6 cells. Compared with that of NOR, mutagenicity and median lethal concentration of P1-P8 in fathead minnow were increased, and bioaccumulation factor and oral median lethal dose of P1-P8 in rats were decreased.

High-level quantum chemical calculations are performed for the (NH)MO and (NH)MO species (M = Ti-Cu), extending our previous work on the bare MO ions. The potential energy curves along the M-O distance are constructed for the ground and multiple excited electronic states of (NH)MO and are compared to those of MO. We see that ammonia stabilizes the oxo states (MO) over the oxyl (MO) ones.

Understanding RNA-protein interactions is crucial for uncovering the mechanisms of cellular processes and can provide insights into the basis of various diseases, paving the way for the development of targeted therapeutic interventions. Exposure to stress conditions, such as hypoxia, leads to a drop in intracellular pH, which, in turn, alters the ionization states of amino acid residues and RNA bases, affecting the charge distribution and electrostatic interactions between RNA and proteins. In addition, pH also perturbs the structure and dynamics of proteins via the disruption of H-bonds and ionic interactions.

Perturbation of the deoxyribonucleotide triphosphate (dNTP) pool is recognized for contributing to the mutagenic processes involved in oncogenesis. The RAS gene family encodes well characterized oncoproteins whose structure and function are among the most frequently altered in several cancers. In this work, we show that fluctuation of the dNTP pool induces CG->TA mutations across the whole genome, including RAS gene at codons for glycine 12 and 13, known hotspots in cancers.
