The aim of this work is to investigate the mechanical performances and corrosion resistance of open-cell aluminium foams with an electroplated nickel coating. The influence of two different electrolytic solutions on mechanical properties and corrosion resistance was studied: The Watts solution (nickel sulphate-based solution) and a nickel sulphamate solution (widely adopted). Scanning electron microscopy and stereoscopic analysis allowed for the estimation of the coating uniformity and adhesion to the substrate. In order to assess the improvement of performances, compression and corrosion tests were performed on coated and uncoated foams. In addition, annealing was investigated in relation to different operational parameters, related both to electro-deposition (electrolyte, deposition current and time) and to annealing (treatment temperature). From the results, the yield stress and the corrosion resistance improved. Moreover, the annealing at increasing temperature was found to reduce the yield stress, but Ni-coated foams showed higher values of stress for all the considered treatment temperatures.

High-temperature reduction of TiO causes the gradual formation of structural defects, leading to oxygen vacancy planar defects and giving rise to Magnéli phases, which are substoichiometric titanium oxides that follow the formula Ti O, with 4 ≤ ≤ 9. A high concentration of defects provides several possible configurations for Ti and Ti within the crystal, with the variation in charge ordered states changing the electronic structure of the material. The changes in crystal and electronic structures of Magnéli phases introduce unique properties absent in TiO, facilitating their diverse applications.

Poor wear- and corrosion-resistance of 316L SS implants are critical problems in orthopedic implants. This study aims to improve the wear- and corrosion-resistance of 316L SS through surface coating. In this study, a bilayer composite coating consisting of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) as the first layer, and titania (TiO)- and Cu-doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (Cu-MBGNs) were deposited as the second layer on a 316L SS electrophoretic deposition (EPD).

We investigate the phase stability, bonding interactions, electronic structures, lattice distortions, mechanical, and thermal properties of six RHEAs with varying elemental ratios using VASP and OLCAO DFT calculations. Through comprehensive analysis, we investigate the impact of elemental variations on the electronic structure, interacting bond dynamics, lattice distortion, thermodynamic, mechanical, and thermal properties within these RHEAs, providing an insight into how these specific elemental variations in composition give rise to changes in the calculated properties in ways that would guide future experimental and computational efforts.

Renewable energy-powered seawater electrolysis is a green and attractive technique for producing high-purity hydrogen. However, severe chlorideions (Cl) and their derivatives tend to corrode anodic catalysts at ampere-level current densities and hinder the application of seawater-to-H systems. Herein, a polycalmagite (PCM)-coated NiFe layered double hydroxide is presented on Ni foam (NiFe LDH@PCM/NF) that exhibits exceptional stability in alkaline seawater.

Acid rain can significantly undermine the structural integrity and seismic resilience of concrete structures, posing substantial risks of catastrophic failures and jeopardizing safety. However, studies on the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns affected by acid rain corrosion remain nascent. Therefore, this study explored the impact of acid-rain corrosion extent and axial compression ratio on the seismic behavior of RC columns that experienced flexural failure using an artificial rapid corrosion method and pseudo-static test in sequence.
