LiGeTeO prepared at ambient pressure adopts the corundum derivative ordered ilmenite structure (rhombohedral R3). When heated at 1073 K and 3-5 GPa, the as-made LiGeTeO can convert into a LiSbO-derived LiTiTeO-type phase (orthorhombic Pnn2), which is the third LiSbO-derived double ABB'O phase in addition to LiTiTeO and LiSnTeO. This Pnn2 LiGeTeO phase spontaneously reverts to the R3 phase if annealed up to 1023 K at ambient pressure. Although the crystal structural analyses and second harmonic generation measurements clearly demonstrate the polar nature of both the R3 and Pnn2 phases, P( E) and dielectric measurements do not show any convincing ferroelectric response. Given the large estimated spontaneous polarization (17 and 80 μC/cm), the absence of ferroelectric behavior could be attributed to the random domain distribution and leakage due to Li-ion migration.

Pore-Controllable Synthesis of Phthalic Acid-Derived Hierarchical Activated Carbon for Dilute CO Capture.

Inorg Chem

December 2024

Textile Pollution Controlling Engineering Center of Ministry of Ecology and Environment, College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Donghua University, Shanghai 201620, China.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) from dilute sources is an important strategy for stabilizing the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide and global temperature. However, the adsorption process is extremely challenging due to the sluggish diffusion rate of dilute CO. Herein, -phthalic acid (PTA)-derived hierarchical porous activated carbon (PTA-C) with abundant micro- and mesopores was successfully prepared for dilute CO (2 vol %) capture at ambient conditions.

With the applications of in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrical - measurement, and ambient pressure hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-HAXPES), the characteristics of the topotactic phase transition of LaCoO (LCO) thin films are examined. XRD measurements show clear evidence of structural phase transition (SPT) of the LCO thin films from the perovskite (PV) LaCoO to the brownmillerite (BM) LaCoO phases through the intermediate LaCoO phase at a temperature of 350 °C under high-vacuum conditions, ∼10 mbar. The reverse SPT from BM to PV phases is also found under ambient pressure (>100 mbar) of air near 100 °C.

Innovative One-Step Sustainable Process to Produce Simonkolleite Nanoparticles.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Industrial and Information Engineering and Economics, University of L'Aquila, Piazzale E. Pontieri 1, Monteluco di Roio, Roio Poggio, 67100 L'Aquila, AQ, Italy.

The aim of the present paper is to propose an innovative, one-step and sustainable process allowing us to obtain almost 10 kg/week of pure and crystalline simonkolleite nanoparticles (SK NPs) in only 8 min of reaction, working in water, under ambient conditions of pressure/temperature, guaranteeing at the same time low environmental impact and a high yield of NP production. In addition, the obtained NPs can also act as ZnO precursors at ambient temperature, and this result supports the sustainability of the process considering that, generally, the production of ZnO from SK occurred via annealing at high temperatures. The SK NPs appeared pure and crystalline, characterized by a highly uniform hexagonal lamellar feature.

A recrosslinkable CO-resistant branched preformed particle gel (CO-BRPPG) was developed for controlling CO injection conformance, particularly in reservoirs with super-permeable channels. Previous work focused on a millimeter-sized CO-BRPPG in open fractures, but its performance in high-permeability channels with pore throat networks remained unexplored. This study used a sandpack model to evaluate a micro-sized CO-BRPPG under varying conditions of salinity, gel concentration, and pH.

Ambient mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) enables hundreds of analytes in tissue sections to be directly mapped at atmospheric pressure with minimal sample preparation. This field is currently experiencing rapid growth, with numerous reported ambient ionization techniques resulting in a "hundred flowers bloom" situation. Nanospray desorption electrospray ionization (nano-DESI), developed by the Laskin group in 2010, is a widely used liquid-extraction-based ambient ionization technique that was first used for mass spectrometry imaging of tissue in 2012.
