Aims: This literature review examines the effectiveness of the family interventions (FIs) targeted at the primary caregivers of people diagnosed with schizophrenia on improving the knowledge level of schizophrenia and health-related outcomes.

Methods: A total of nine studies were reviewed from December 1999 to May 2017. The methods described by the Center for Reviews and Dissemination were used to guide this review.

Results: The FIs showed consistent improvement in the knowledge level of schizophrenia among participants for various follow-up intervals. In addition, FIs were found to be superior to treatment as usual in influencing health-related outcomes.

Conclusions: Implications of the findings for mental healthcare practice to include primary caregivers with the patient in the treatment process.

Use of Practices to Reduce of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death among Caregivers of Opioid Exposed Newborns.

J Addict Med

December 2024

From the Department of Pediatrics, UMass Chan School of Medicine, Worcester, MA (MGP, AE); Slone Epidemiology Center, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, MA (FR, CP, SK, MC); Divisions of General Academic Pediatrics and Newborn Medicine, Mass General for Children, Boston, MA (DMS); Department of Pediatrics, Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis, MO (BC, HF, EC); Department of Pediatrics, UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate, Worcester, MA (KH); Department of Biostatistics, Boston University School of Public Health, Boston, MA (TH); and Department of Pediatrics, Boston Medical Center, Boston, MA (EMW).

Objectives: Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) occurs disproportionately among opioid exposed newborns (OENs) compared to those unexposed. The extent that primary caregivers of OENs adhere to SUID-reducing infant care practices is unknown. We examined rates of SUID-reducing practices (smoking cessation, breastfeeding, and safe sleep [supine sleep, room-sharing not bed-sharing, nonuse of soft bedding or objects]) in a pilot sample of caregivers of OENs.

Background: In recent years, cancer survival rates have increased exponentially. However, this rise in survival comes with a significant drawback. As the number of treatment lines has grown, so too have the side effects, which can severely impact patients' functionality and quality of life.

Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional survey with medical record review was conducted in 10 Canadian PEDs.

Background: The Enhanced Dementia Surveillance Initiative (EDSI), led by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), supports the implementation of Canada's first national dementia strategy. To improve the national monitoring of dementia and its health impacts, the EDSI projects focused on priority data gaps: dementia by cause, progression stages and impacts; socio-demographic characteristics, risk and protective factors; and caregivers.

Method: PHAC collaborated on 15 projects with multiple stakeholders (universities/research institutions, health organizations, and federal/provincial government departments).
