A large primary orbital lymphoma with proptosis: A case report and review.

Published: December 2018

Background: Primary orbital lymphomas are a rare subset of tumors constituting 1-2% of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. They are mostly indolent B-cell lymphomas presenting with gradual progressive proptosis, decreased visual acuity, restricted ocular mobility, and diplopia. The role of surgery is mainly for obtaining a biopsy. Most of these tumors require multimodality treatment including chemotherapy, radiation, or both, which have major role.

Case Description: We report one such case of marginal zone lymphoma of the orbit in a female with significant proptosis who was treated with multimodality treatment, including surgical excision as a major treatment modality. Decompression of symptomatic proptosis was followed by chemotherapy and radiation.

Conclusion: Primary orbital lymphoma is a rare clinical entity with diverse clinical outcomes. It can be successfully managed with surgical excision for decompression of mechanical proptosis followed by chemotherapy, radiation, or both.

This study reports a novel ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on a tetraphenylethylene-bipyridine covalent organic framework (TPE-Bpy-COF) for the sensitive detection of Cu, leveraging the unique coordination properties of the bipyridine moieties. The interaction between Cu and the nitrogen atoms in the bipyridine units induces fluorescence quenching at 500 nm through an efficient host-guest electron transfer mechanism, where excited-state electrons from the COF framework are transferred to the vacant orbitals of Cu. Upon excitation at 410 nm, the sensor exhibits a primary emission peak at 500 nm, which is quenched in the presence of Cu, while an overtone peak at 820 nm remains stable, serving as an internal reference for ratiometric measurements and significantly enhancing the accuracy and reliability of the sensor.

The binding of carbon dioxide to a transition metal is a complex phenomenon that involves a major redistribution of electron density between the metal center and the triatomic ligand. The chemical reduction of the ligand reveals itself unambiguously by an angular distortion of the CO-molecule as a result of the occupation of an anti-bonding π-orbital and a shift of its antisymmetric stretching vibration, ν, to lower wavenumbers. Here, we generate a carbon dioxide complex of the heavier group-10 metal, platinum, by ultrafast electronic excitation and cleavage of CO from the photolabile oxalate precursor, oxaliplatin, and monitored the ensuing primary dynamics with ultrafast mid-infrared spectroscopy.

Acute rhinosinusitis causes more than 30 million patients to seek health care per year in the United States. Respiratory tract infections, including bronchitis and sinusitis, account for 75% of outpatient antibiotic prescriptions in primary care. Sinusitis is a clinical diagnosis; the challenge lies in distinguishing between the symptoms of bacterial and viral sinusitis.

Energy Metabolism Section, National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Obesity Branch, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD.

Introduction: ActiGraph accelerometers are used extensively to objectively assess physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep. Here, we present an objective validation of five generations of ActiGraph sensors to characterize potential differences in output arising from changes to hardware or firmware.

Methods: An orbital shaker generated accelerations from 0 to 3700 milli-g in a randomized order to test the wGT3X-BT, GT9X, CentrePoint Insight Watch (CPIW) 1.
