Dog liver cytosolic glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) were investigated to characterize their properties in comparison with rat liver transferases. Dog liver GSTs after the glutathione affinity column chromatography showed three subunit bands on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. These three subunits, designated as Yd1 (mol.wt 26,000), Yd2 (mol.wt 27,000) and Yd3 (mol.wt 28,000), were distinctly different from rat liver GST subunits, i.e. Ya(1) (mol.wt 26,500), Yb1(3)/Yb2(4) (mol.wt 27,500) and Yc(2) (mol.wt 28,500). Western blot analysis revealed that Yd1, Yd2 and Yd3 were immunoreacted with anti-rat GST 7-7, 1-1 and 3-3 antibodies, respectively. Four transferase activity fractions, I (pH greater than 7.63), II (pH 6.92), III (pH 5.80) and IV (pH 5.65), were obtained from affinity purified GSTs by chromatofocusing. Each fraction exhibited a characteristic substrate specificity. GST-II, III and IV were all strongly immunoreacted with anti-rat GST 7-7 antibody by immunoblotting, thus suggesting the occurrence of the heterogeneity of transferases immunologically related to rat GST subunit 7 in dog liver. Immunohistochemical examination showed that transferases immunoreacted with anti-GST 7-7 antibody have diffusely distributed throughout the lobule, while enzymes related to subunit 3 have been localized in a narrow range of cells around the central vein. These data suggest that GSTs immunologically associated with rat transferase subunit 7 may be major forms in dog liver.

An 8-y-old, spayed female Bernese Mountain Dog was presented to a referral center for evaluation of right thoracic limb lameness and previously suspected Evans syndrome that had been poorly responsive to immunosuppressive therapy. Based on review of examination findings and laboratory data, Evans syndrome was deemed unlikely and hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma (HHS) was strongly suspected. On blood smear evaluation, atypical, histiocytic cells were noted, some of which exhibited siderophagia.

Introduction: Cystic echinococcosis is a widely endemic helminthic disease caused by infection with metacestodes (larval stage) of the Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm, which is transmitted by dogs and found on every continent except Antarctica. We sought to review the life cycle, epidemiology, symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatment of Echinococcus granulosus of the liver.
Methods: A comprehensive review was conducted using Medline/PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, and the Web of Science accessed between 1990 and 2024.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in dogs is a metabolic disorder of the central nervous system that occurs secondarily to liver dysfunctions, whether due to acquired or congenital causes. A portosystemic shunt is the presence of abnormal communications between the hepatic vessels (portal and suprahepatic veins). As a result of this, the blood brought from the digestive tract through the portal vein bypasses the liver, and the unmetabolized components of the portal bloodstream enter directly into systemic circulation, causing clinical symptoms of metabolic encephalopathy (HE).

A 3-year-old spayed male mixed-breed Labrador presented to the Emergency and Critical Care Unit with lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, a recent history of presyncopal episodes, and severe exercise intolerance. On admission, the patient had bradycardia, low blood pressure, and mild abdominal pain. Serum biochemistry information revealed severe hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, hypoglycemia, and mildly increased liver and kidney parameters.
