Cirrhosis has four different stages that encompass mild stable compensated cirrhosis, stable cirrhosis with prior decompensation, acutely decompensated cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure. A worse ALBI score has been associated to an increased mortality in a recent study involving patients with stable cirrhosis and prior decompensation.

Renal fibrosis is a common pathway involved in the progression of various chronic kidney diseases to end-stage renal disease. Recent studies show that mitochondrial injury of renal tubular epithelial cells (RTECs) is a crucial pathological foundation for renal fibrosis. However, the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear.

Introduction: Cellular characteristics of induced sputum (IS) are not investigated in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients.
Objectives: This pilot study, conducted on 17 expectorating CF adolescents, compared sputa obtained the same day, in a stable period, by autogenic drainage (expectorating sputum, ES) and 4 h later after inhaling hypertonic saline (IS).
Results: No difference was noted concerning weight, volume, and percentage of dead cells between the two collection methods.

Background: Covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) is a stable, episomal form of HBV DNA. cccDNA is a true marker for the intrahepatic events in controlled CHB infection. Quantifying cccDNA is critical for monitoring disease progression, and efficacy of anti-viral therapies.

One of the main drivers of fibrotic diseases is epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT): a transdifferentiation process in which cells undergo a phenotypic change from an epithelial state to a pro-migratory state. The cytokine transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) has been previously shown to regulate EMT. TGF-β1 binds to fibronectin (FN) fibrils, which are the primary extracellular matrix (ECM) component in renal fibrosis.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) covers a range of liver conditions marked by the buildup of fat, spanning from simple fatty liver to more advanced stages like metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis and cirrhosis.
Methods: Our in-depth analysis of PNPLA3_WT and mutants (I148M (MT1) and C15S (MT2)) provides insights into their structure-function dynamics in lipid metabolism, especially lipid droplet hydrolysis and ABHD5 binding. Employing molecular docking, binding affinity, MD analysis, dissociation constant, and MM/GBSA analysis, we delineated distinct binding characteristics between wild-type and mutants.
