Pharmaceutical crystalline polymorph and amorphous form detection and quantification is a standard requirement in the pharmaceutical industry. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy provides an important probe for the characterization of polymorphs. Nonetheless, characterization and discrimination among polymorphs using mid-IR spectroscopy is not always possible in part because the technique mainly probes vibrational modes arising from functional groups in the sample. In the present work, far-IR spectroscopy is demonstrated for the discrimination of polymorphs. This region is influenced by delocalized lattice vibrational modes derived from intermolecular forces and packing arrangements in the crystal structure. A total of 10 polymorphic pharmaceuticals were prepared to conduct a critical evaluation of the question, does this far-IR region add value for polymorph differentiation? It is demonstrated that the far-IR region offers high discriminating power for polymorphs compared to the mid-IR spectral region. In addition, structural similarity and dissimilarity in polymorphic packing arrangements can be derived from this analysis.

Understanding how TiO2 interacts with CO2 at the molecular level is crucial in the CO2 reduction toward value-added energy sources. Here, we report in-situ observations of the CO2 activation process on the reduced TiO2(110) surface at room temperature using ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscopy. We found that oxygen vacancies (Vo) diffuse dynamically along the bridging oxygen (Obr) rows of the TiO2(110) surface under ambient CO2(g) environments.

Studying the properties and phase diagram of iron at high-pressure and high-temperature conditions has relevant implications for Earth's inner structure and dynamics and the temperature of the inner core boundary (ICB) at 330 GPa. Also, a hexagonal-closed packed to body-centered cubic (bcc) phase transition has been predicted by many theoretical works but observed only in a few experiments. The recent coupling of high-power laser with advanced x-ray sources from synchrotrons allows for novel approaches to address these issues.

We have observed the Berry phase effect associated with interband coherence in topological surface states (TSSs) using two-color high-harmonic spectroscopy. This Berry phase accumulates along the evolution path of strong field-driven electron-hole quasiparticles in electronic bands with strong spin-orbit coupling. By introducing a secondary weak field, we perturb the evolution of Dirac fermions in TSSs and thus provide access to the Berry phase.

Affordable and eco-friendly green spectrofluorometric (FL) methods can enhance the safety and cost-effectiveness of quality assurance and control in ascorbic acid (ASA) formulations. However, most current techniques for ASA analysis have faced challenges like complexity, delayed response times, low throughput, time-consuming procedures, and requirements for expensive equipment and hazardous chemicals for analyte modification. The study is aimed at producing natural carbon quantum dots (NACQDs) from pumpkin seed peels (PSPs), a natural waste material, using a rapid microwave-assisted method.
