A central goal in research on visual perception is to understand how the visual system represents the shapes of objects. According to many theorists, axes defined on the basis of object geometry provide a coordinate system for representing the locations and orientations of object parts. An important question that has received little attention concerns how object axes are defined-that is, what aspects of object geometry determine how axes are assigned to shapes? We evaluated 2 hypotheses. According to the elongated-part hypothesis, axes are defined on the basis an object's most elongated part, such that, for example, the principal axis for a hatchet would coincide with the long axis of the hatchet's handle. In contrast, the global-shape hypothesis holds that axes are defined on the basis of an object's overall shape (e.g., for the hatchet, as the longest axis that spans the entire hatchet). Using a novel paradigm involving analysis of mirror-image confusions, we obtained evidence strongly supporting the elongated-part hypothesis. Our results also point to a role for secondary as well as principal axes in object shape representation. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved).

A key property of our environment is the mirror symmetry of many objects, although symmetry is an abstract global property with no definable shape template, making symmetry identification a challenge for standard template-matching algorithms. We therefore ask whether Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) trained on typical natural environmental images develop a selectivity for symmetry similar to that of the human brain. We tested a DNN trained on such typical natural images with object-free random-dot images of 1, 2, and 4 symmetry axes.

A bolt loosening detection method based on the summation coefficient of the absolute spectrum ratio technique is proposed to address the prevalent issue of bolt loosening in mechanical connections. This proposed method involves initially collecting vibration and rotation speed signals of the motor bolt connection structure, acquiring the baseline spectrum curve of a healthy structure and the spectrum curves of non-healthy structures under different degrees of bolt looseness through chirp Fourier transform (CFT). Subsequently, the spectrum ratio curves between healthy and non-healthy structures are calculated for different degrees of bolt loosening, and then the Summation Coefficient of Absolute Spectrum Ratio (SCASR) is defined to indicate the looseness.

Objectives: To propose a reliable and standard 3D assessment method to analyze the effect of weight-bearing (WB) status on the location of patella and clarify the diagnostic performance of 3D parameters for recurrent patellar dislocation (RPD) in WB and non-weight-bearing (NWB) conditions.
Methods: Sixty-five knees of RPD patients and 99 knees of controls were included. Eight landmarks, two lines and a coordinate system were defined on 3D bone models of knees based on weight-bearing CT and non-weight-bearing CT.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of strengthening national monitoring systems to safeguard a globally connected society, especially those in low- and middle-income countries. Africa's rapid adoption of digital technological interventions created a new frontier of digital advancement during crises or pandemics. The use of digital tools for disease surveillance can assist with rapid outbreak identification and response, handling duties such as diagnosis, testing, contact tracing, and risk communication.
