Fucoidan extracted from brown algae displays diverse biological activities. In the present study, fucoidan was mixed with Chinese herb extracts, and the in vitro and in vivo immunomodulatory effects of two fucoidan compound agents were evaluated. The results showed that fucoidan from Kjellmaniella crassifolia (KF) and Undaria pinnatifida (UF) were sulfated polysaccharides, Astragalus polysaccharide (AP) was composed of α-d-glucose, and Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharide (CPP) was a furanose. Furthermore, fucoidan compound agents stimulated mouse macrophage RAW264.7 cell proliferation and enhanced the secretion of granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in vitro. In addition, KCA (KF + AP + CPP) and UCA (UF + AP + CPP) could improve the nonspecific immunity and the specific immunity of BALB/c mice. Fucoidan compound agents also increased the secretion of GM-CSF, TNF-α, interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-10 in vivo. Therefore, we confirmed that fucoidan compound agents have promise for development as supplementary immunopotentiators.

Neuropathic pain, a challenging condition often associated with diabetes, trauma, or chemotherapy, impairs patients' quality of life. Current treatments often provide inconsistent relief and notable adverse effects, highlighting the urgent need for safer and more effective alternatives. This review investigates marine-derived bioactive compounds as potential novel therapies for neuropathic pain management.

Brown seaweeds are known for their bioactive compounds, particularly sulfated polysaccharides such as fucoidans, which have demonstrated antiviral properties. However, limited studies have focused on the antiviral potential of fucoidans extracted from Mediterranean brown seaweeds. In this study, two brown seaweeds Padina pavonica and Dictyopteris membranacea (Fuc-Pad and Fuc-Dic) were collected from monastir coasts, Tunisia, and a specific extraction protocol was employed to obtain fucoidans.

Plants and algae harbor diverse molecules with antioxidant activity and have been demonstrated to directly inhibit cancer cell growth and mitigate the oxidative damage associated with certain antitumor therapies. While antioxidant supplementation, either alone or in combination with chemotherapy, has shown promise in improving quality of life, further research is needed to explore the effects of antioxidant combinations on specific cancer cell lines. In this study, the in vitro cytotoxic and apoptotic properties of natural compounds derived from plants and algae, as well as certain dietary supplements, were investigated against various human cancer cell lines, including bone, leukemia, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers.

Neurodegenerative pathologies such as age-related macular degeneration currently have no cure or effective treatment. In this type of disease, the presence of amyloid-β peptides, oxidative stress, and inflammation trigger dysregulation of retinal pigment epithelial cells and progression toward the death of these cells, resulting in a loss of vision. The production of amyloid-β peptides, oxidative stress, and inflammation can be triggered in response to viral infections.

Cystitis glandularis (CG), known as a pre-gradual lesion in the bladder, is the pathological changes in the vesical mucosa characterized by inflammatory invasion and chronic obstruction. Clinically, effective treatment against CG is prescribed only when using drug therapy. Fucoidan, the naturally extractive polysaccharide, is well-reported bioactive compound with anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory properties.
