Motivation: Cell microscopy datasets have great diversity due to variability in cell types, imaging techniques and protocols. Existing methods are either tailored to specific datasets or are based on supervised learning, which requires comprehensive manual annotations. Using the latter approach, however, poses a significant difficulty due to the imbalance between the number of mitotic cells with respect to the entire cell population in a time-lapse microscopy sequence.

Results: We present a fully unsupervised framework for both mitosis detection and mother-daughters association in fluorescence microscopy data. The proposed method accommodates the difficulty of the different cell appearances and dynamics. Addressing symmetric cell divisions, a key concept is utilizing daughters' similarity. Association is accomplished by defining cell neighborhood via a stochastic version of the Delaunay triangulation and optimization by dynamic programing. Our framework presents promising detection results for a variety of fluorescence microscopy datasets of different sources, including 2D and 3D sequences from the Cell Tracking Challenge.

Availability And Implementation: Code is available in github (github.com/topazgl/mitodix).

Supplementary Information: Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

VAE-IF: Deep feature extraction with averaging for fully unsupervised artifact detection in routinely acquired ICU time-series.

Comput Biol Med

Artifacts are a common problem in physiological time series collected from intensive care units (ICU) and other settings. They affect the quality and reliability of clinical research and patient care. Manual annotation of artifacts is costly and time-consuming, rendering it impractical.

Group-equivariant neural networks have emerged as an efficient approach to model complex data, using generalized convolutions that respect the relevant symmetries of a system. These techniques have made advances in both the supervised learning tasks for classification and regression, and the unsupervised tasks to generate new data. However, little work has been done in leveraging the symmetry-aware expressive representations that could be extracted from these approaches.

Background: We aimed to identify and characterise the longitudinal patterns of multimorbidity associated with stroke.

Methods: We used an unsupervised patient-oriented clustering approach to analyse primary care electronic health records (EHR) of 30 common long-term conditions (LTC) in patients with stroke aged over 18, registered in 41 general practices in south London between 2005 and 2021.

Results: Of 849,968 registered patients, 9,847 (1.

Changes in DNA methylation are associated with systemic lupus erythematosus flare remission and clinical subtypes.

Clin Epigenetics

December 2024

Genomics of Autoimmune Rheumatic Disease Section, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA.

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has numerous symptoms across organs and an unpredictable flare-remittance pattern. This has made it challenging to understand drivers of long-term SLE outcomes. Our objective was to identify whether changes in DNA methylation over time, in an actively flaring SLE cohort, were associated with remission and whether these changes meaningfully subtype SLE patients.

Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) affects about 3-7% of the global population, but is often undiagnosed. It involves pauses in breathing during sleep, for at least 10 s, due to partial or total airway blockage. The current gold standard for diagnosing SAS is polysomnography (PSG), an intrusive procedure that depends on subjective assessment by expert clinicians.
