Physiological and hormonal responses to novelty exposure in rats are mainly related to ongoing behavioral activity.

Physiol Behav

Stress research has been dominated by a circular type of reasoning that occurrence of a stress response is bad. Consequently, the stimulus is often interpreted as stressful in terms of aversiveness involving uncontrollability and unpredictability, which may have maladaptive and pathological consequences. However, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathico-adrenomedullary (SAM) system are not only activated in response of the organism to challenges, but also prepare and support the body for behavior.

Hormonal and organ weight changes in rats exposed to simultaneous chronic effects of CO and NO2.

Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Hradec Králové, Czechoslovakia.

Unlabelled: Activity of the pituitary-adrenocortical, sympathico-adrenomedullary and thyroid gland systems was examined in groups of male adult rats, average weight 180 g, exposed for 2 months to a mixture of 7 mg.m-3 NO2 and 32 mg.m-3 CO in air and in groups of matched controls inhaling fresh air.

Application of electrocutaneous stimuli for short-time excitation of swine, accompanied by high locomotor activity, led in animals weighing between 30 kg and 45 kg to steep rises of catecholamine and glucocorticosteroid plasma concentrations, while little change was recordable from protein-linked iodine. Increase in plasma glucose and RQ in animals with higher rises in plasma-borne catecholamines and glucocorticoids was higher than that in animals with lower catecholamine deflection. Both the results reported in this paper and findings obtained from other studies into swine are likely to suggest major involvement of the sympathico-adrenomedullary system in the buildup of transport stress.
