Tissue engineering has the advantage of replicating soft tissue mechanics to better simulate and integrate into native soft tissue. However, soft tissue engineering has been fraught with issues of insufficient tissue strength to withstand physiological mechanical requirements. This factor is due to the lack of strength inherent in cell-only constructs and in the biomaterials used for soft tissue engineering and limited extracellular matrix (ECM) production possible in cell culture.

Hydrogels are polymeric biomaterials characterised by their promising biological and biomechanical properties, which make them potential alternatives for use in tendon repair. The aim of the present study was to generate in vitro, and determine the therapeutic efficacy in vivo, of novel nanostructured fibrin-based hydrogels to be used as an augmentation strategy for the surgical repair of rat Achilles tendon injuries. Fibrin, fibrin-agarose and fibrin-collagen nanostructured hydrogels (NFH, NFAH and NFCH, respectively) were generated and their biomechanical properties and cell-biomaterial interactions characterised ex vivo.

Blood plays an essential role in the human body. Hemorrhage is a critical cause of both military and civilian casualties. The human body has its own hemostatic mechanism that involves complex processes and has limited capacity.

Occlusive thrombosis is a central pathological event in heart attack, stroke, thromboembolism, etc. Therefore, pharmacological thrombolysis or anticoagulation is used for treating these diseases. However, systemic administration of such drugs causes hemorrhagic side-effects.

Novel developments in surgical glues for sealing wounds, surgical incision and tissue healing was inspired by limitations related to other surgical techniques. Sealants or bioadhesives are considered as a promising candidate over sutures, staples for sealing of air and gas leakages with minimal scarring in different surgeries. Their physical, biological properties and adhesive strength have encouraged many surgeons for employing them in clinical practice.
