is a well-known endosymbiotic, strictly cytoplasmic bacterium. It establishes complex cytonuclear relations that are not necessarily deleterious to its host, but that often result in reproductive alterations favoring bacterial transmission. Among these alterations, a common one is the cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) that reduces the number of descendants in certain crosses between infected and non-infected individuals. This CI induced by appears in the hybrid zone that the grasshoppers (Cpp) and (Cpe) form in the Pyrenees: a reputed model in evolutionary biology. However, this cytonuclear incompatibility is the result of sophisticated processes of the co-divergence of the genomes of the bacterial strains and the host after generations of selection and coevolution. Here we show how these genome conflicts have resulted in a finely tuned adjustment of the bacterial strain to each pure orthopteroid taxon, and the striking appearance of another, newly identified recombinant strain that only occurs in hybrid grasshoppers. We propose the existence of two superimposed hybrid zones: one organized by the grasshoppers, which overlaps with a second, bacterial hybrid zone. The two hybrid zones counterbalance one another and have evolved together since the origin of the grasshopper's hybrid zone.

Introduction: An efficient procedure was reported for the synthesis of novel hybrid dithiazoles 7 and thiazoles 15, in good yields, by applying hydrazonyl chlorides 4 with thiocarbohydrazone derivatives 3 and 12.

Methods: The thiazole derivatives were evaluated for their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities.

Results: According to the results, thiazoles revealed marked potency as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents.

Synthesis and Evaluation of Coumarin Clubbed Sulfanilamide and 2-Aminobenzothiazole Hybrids for Antibacterial Applications.

Curr Top Med Chem

January 2025

Department of Pharmacy, Division of Research and Innovation, Chandigarh Pharmacy College, Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Jhanjeri, Mohali, Punjab 140307, India.

Background: The increasing prevalence of drug-resistant bacterial infections poses a significant challenge to global healthcare, necessitating the development of novel antibacterial agents. Coumarin-based derivatives are well-recognized for their diverse biological activities, and hybridization with other pharmacophores offers a promising strategy for enhancing therapeutic efficacy and overcoming resistance.

Objective: This study aimed to synthesize and evaluate a novel series of coumarin hybrids by integrating the coumarin scaffold with sulfanilamide (9a-e) and 2-aminobenzothiazole (10a-e), targeting bacterial pathogens through a dual pharmacophoric approach.

Comparative assessment of empirical and hybrid machine learning models for estimating daily reference evapotranspiration in sub-humid and semi-arid climates.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water Chair, Prince Sultan Institute for Environmental, Water and Desert Research, King Saud University, P.O. Box 2454, Riyadh 11451, Saudi Arabia.

Improving the accuracy of reference evapotranspiration (RET) estimation is essential for effective water resource management, irrigation planning, and climate change assessments in agricultural systems. The FAO-56 Penman-Monteith (PM-FAO56) model, a widely endorsed approach for RET estimation, often encounters limitations due to the lack of complete meteorological data. This study evaluates the performance of eight empirical models and four machine learning (ML) models, along with their hybrid counterparts, in estimating daily RET within the Gharb and Loukkos irrigated perimeters in Morocco.

Hybrid Soft Segments Boost the Development of Ultratough Thermoplastic Elastomers with Tunable Hardness.

Adv Mater

January 2025

National Engineering Research Center for Colloidal Materials, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, 250100, P. R. China.

The hardness of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) significantly influences their suitability for various applications, but traditionally, enhancing hardness reduces toughness. Herein a method is introduced that leverages hybrid soft segments to fine-tune the hardness of TPEs without compromising their exceptional toughness. Through the selective copolymerization of polytetramethylene ether glycols (PTMEGs) at various molecular weights, supramolecular poly(urethane-urea) TPEs are molecularly engineered to cover a wide spectrum of hardness while retaining good toughness.

Chemical signals and social structures strengthen sexual isolation in Drosophila pseudoobscura.

Commun Biol

January 2025

Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada.

Species that coexist in hybrid zones sexually isolate through reproductive character displacement, a mechanism that favours divergence between species. In Drosophila, behavioural and physiological traits discourage heterospecific mating between species. Recently, social network analysis revealed flies produce strain-specific and species-specific social structures.
