Determination of how carotenoid-based color patches change with pigmentary access is important to understanding color patch function in animals. We performed a carotenoid addition experiment on male painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) to determine if an increase in dietary carotenoids led to location-specific changes in painted turtle spot and stripe color. Turtles fed large quantities of carotenoids had increased yellow chroma in chin stripes and increased red chroma in the neck and carapace stripes, as well as reduced ultraviolet (UV) chroma in the neck (orange to the human eye) and fore -limb (red to the human eye) stripes. Turtles fed large quantities of carotenoid had reduced brightness (B) in the hind-limb stripes (red to the human eye) as well as reduced red and UV chroma in the post orbital spot of turtles (yellow to the human eye) compared to turtles fed moderate amounts of carotenoid. These results imply that integumentary spot and stripe colors are dependent upon carotenoid access, and increased lutein access leads to increased yellow and red chroma, as well as reduced ultra-violet chroma and brightness in male painted turtles. These results are discussed with respect to dietary access to carotenoids and color in other model systems, and the possibility that spot and stripe color functions as a visual signal.

Nonequilibrium membrane pattern formation is studied using meshless membrane simulation. We consider that molecules bind to either surface of a bilayer membrane and move to the opposite leaflet by flip-flop. When binding does not modify the membrane properties and the transfer rates among the three states are cyclically symmetric, the membrane exhibits spiral-wave and homogeneous-cycling modes at high and low binding rates, respectively, as in an off-lattice cyclic Potts model.

The new species is distinguished from its congeners with transverse lobe and incipient proboscis, in having a well-developed transverse lobe with around 9-12 minute tubercles, deep transverse groove between transverse lobe and incipient proboscis, black spot immediately anterior to upper angle of gill opening, 5-6 dark black stripes on caudal peduncle, 33-35 lateral line scales, 9-10 predorsal scales, 16-circumpeduncular scales, 15 branched pectoral-fin rays, and total vertebrae 33.

We here report on likely human-mediated, stray sightings of Dendrelaphis proarchos (Wall, 1909) in an unnatural range-Surat, Gujarat in western India. This population shows the following characters: (1) vertebral scales distinctly enlarged, larger than the dorsals of the first row; (2) 185-194 ventrals; (3) 139-142 divided subcaudals in complete tails; (4) 15 dorsal scale rows at midbody; (5) cloacal shield undivided; (6) one loreal scale; (7) three supralabials touching the eye; (8) a moderate first sublabial that touches two infralabials; (9) 11-12 temporal scales; (10) preoculars 1 or 2; (11) two or three postoculars; (12) maximum total length 1150 mm; (13) interparietal spot absent; (14) a black temporal stripe that does not starts on the postnasal or loreal but starts on the center of the eye follows postoculars (middle or second postocular) covers the majority of the temporal region and extends onto the neck; (15) a distinct, bright ventrolateral stripe bordered by one black line at the bottom; (16) dorsal interstitial color blue and (17) tongue color red with black tip. Data from a partial fragment of the mitochondrial 16S gene also reveal genetic congruence with published sequences from Sagaing and Ayeyarwady in Myanmar and Mizoram, India, further attesting the morphological conclusions.
