Complete tumour devascularisation (CTD) is a surgical technique which entails the complete disruption by ligation or cutting of afferent and efferent tumour vasculature which remains in situ. In some animal models, CTD induces immune responses that lead to regression of distant metastases and protective immunity.

Transophthalmic Artery Embolization of Anterior Skull Base Meningiomas: Technical Case Series.

AJNR Am J Neuroradiol

December 2024

From the Department of Neurological Surgery (M.A.E., J.R., I.P., A.F., M.H., D.K., C.C., E.E., N.H., V.A., D.J.A.), Montefiore-Einstein Cerebrovascular Research Lab (M.A.E., D.J.A.), and Department of Radiology (A.B.), Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY, USA.

Background And Purpose: Preoperative embolization of anterior skull base meningiomas can facilitate surgical resection by reducing tumor vascularity. However, transophthalmic artery embolization carries risks of visual complications. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this technique using modern endovascular tools.

Article Synopsis
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) effectively targets and destroys cells associated with human papillomavirus (HPV), with a high rate of complete regression observed in both low- and high-squamous intraepithelial lesions among 143 patients studied.* -
  • The study demonstrated significant changes in patients' inflammatory responses post-treatment, including increased white blood cell counts and elevated body temperatures, indicating an immune response triggered by the therapy.* -
  • Acute inflammation resulting from PDT may enhance its antiviral and antitumor effects by activating the immune system and causing changes in local blood flow in the treated areas.*

Maxillary intraosseous hemangioma: case report.

Pan Afr Med J

November 2024

Radiology Department, University Hospital of 20 August 1953, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Casablanca, Hassan II University, Casablanca, Morocco.

Maxillary intraosseous hemangiomas are rare benign vascular lesions, accounting for less than 1% of all primary bone tumors. Clinical examination often reveals a hard, painless swelling mass that is rarely pulsatile. Imaging not only helps to make a positive diagnosis but also contributes to therapeutic management.

Article Synopsis
  • Meningiomas are usually benign but can require urgent treatment when they cause symptoms; a case of a giant, vascularized meningioma necessitated preoperative embolization to minimize surgical risks.
  • A 24-year-old woman with severe visual issues and chronic headaches was diagnosed with a 97 mm meningioma, leading to successful embolization that occluded 75% of the supplying arteries before tumor removal.
  • The study highlighted that preoperative embolization reduced blood loss during surgery, improved visualization of the tumor, and enhanced surgical outcomes, with a low recurrence rate of just 9% over a decade.

Carinal resection is defined as the resection of tracheal-bronchial bifurcation with or without associated lung resection. It is usually indicated in case of primary tumors with limited involvement of the carina. The reported mortality ranges from 3% to 20% in high-volume centers.
