Mud Hills clinoptilolite has been used in an effluent treatment plant (SIXEP) at the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing site. This material has been used to remove Cs and Sr successfully from effluents for 3 decades. Samples of the zeolite have been tested in column experiments to determine their ability to remove radioactive Cs and Sr ions under increasing concentrations of competing ions, Ca, Mg, Na and K. These ions caused increased elution of Cs and Sr. Ca, Mg and K were more effective competitors than Na. For Na, it was found that if concentration was reduced, then column performance recovered rapidly.

Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are spherical structures that contain a small fraction of the periplasm of Gram-negative bacteria, surrounded by its outer membrane. They are naturally produced and detached from the bacterial surface, participate in diverse biological processes, and their diameter size is in the range of 10-300 nm. OMVs have gained interest in different applications, such as the development of biosensors, vaccines, protein chips, and the encapsulation of heterologous proteins and peptides expressed by these microorganisms.

Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology has great advantages for treating urban wastewaters, but, when irrigation cannot be applied and the effluent is discharged in a sensitive zone, a post-treatment of this effluent is needed for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Under this scenario, ion exchange processes represent one of the most promising technologies for treating this effluent. Ion exchange technology allows to meet discharge limits and to recover these nutrients in a highly concentrated stream.

In porous water filters, the transport and entrapment of contaminants can be modeled as a classic mass transport problem, which employs the conventional convection-dispersion equation to predict the transport of species existing in trace amounts. Using the volume-averaging method (VAM), the upscaling has revealed two possible macroscopic equations for predicting contaminant concentrations in the filters. The first equation is the classical convection-dispersion equation, which incorporates a total dispersion tensor.

The extensive use of methyl -butyl ether (MTBE) as a gasoline additive has caused serious environmental problems that need to be addressed urgently. The feasibility of remediation of MTBE-contaminated groundwater by ZSM-5 zeolite with SiO/AlO ratio of 50/130/360 was explored. The SiO/AlO ratio had a great influence on the physicochemical properties and structure, as well as the adsorption and mass transfer of MTBE on ZSM-5.

The increasing use of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) has exposed large populations to this environmental and occupational carcinogenic agent. Therefore, researchers have been interested in removing this substance through adsorbents. This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of natural zeolite in the direct adsorption of Cr(VI) from airflow and its adsorption modeling.
