Objective: To determine the level of correlation between sodium, potassium and creatinine readings between point-of-care venous blood gas (VBG) and laboratory biochemistry measurements (LBM).
Methods: Data was obtained from three Monash Health (one of the largest health networks in metropolitan Melbourne) emergency departments. 16,527 VBGs were matched with LBM for sodium, 16,437 for potassium and 8,597 for creatinine. Pearson correlation and further subgroup analyses were carried out to explore if acid-base imbalance affected sodium, potassium or creatinine reliability in VBG.
Results: The range of VBG values showed more variation in comparison to LBM. There was good correlation (r>0.8, p<0.001) between measured values with the exception of potassium in acidaemia, however, there was consistent and statistically significant difference in measured values.
Conclusions: The small mean differences across all three parameters observed although statistically significant are unlikely to be clinically significant. With minor calibrations, this would be an easily corrected problem. As such, we recommend that sodium, potassium and creatinine measurements can be used interchangeably between the VBG and LBM, with the exception of potassium levels in acidaemia. Potassium levels in acidaemia should be used with caution due to lower correlation.

Background: Ischemic stroke affects 15 million people worldwide, causing five million deaths annually. Despite declining mortality rates, stroke incidence and readmission risks remain high, highlighting the need for preventing readmission to improve the quality of life of survivors. This study developed a machine-learning model to predict 90-day stroke readmission using electronic medical records converted to the common data model (CDM) from the Regional Accountable Care Hospital in Gangwon state in South Korea.

Ionizing radiation emitted from radionuclides is present everywhere in the environment. It is the main source of health hazards to the general public. The present study elaborates on the analysis of primordial radionuclides in the collected soil samples from the Main Central Thrust (MCT) region of Uttarakhand Himalaya in a grid pattern.

Based on its simple valence electron configuration, we may expect lithium to have straightforward physical properties that are easily explained. However, solid lithium, when cooled below 77 K, develops a complex structure that has been debated for decades. A close parallel is found in sodium below 36 K where the crystal structure still remains unresolved.

Detrimental effects of terminal heat stress could be mitigated by exogenous application of synthetic compounds by preserving cell membrane integrity and protecting against oxidative damage. A field experiment was conducted to test the application of seven synthetic compounds on wheat growth traits: (1) thiourea (20 mM and 40mM); (2) potassium nitrate (1% and 2%); (3) sodium nitroprusside (400 μg mL-1 and 800μg mL-1 ); (4) dithiothreitol (25 ppm and 50ppm); (5) salicylic acid (100 ppm and 200ppm); (6) thioglycolic acid (200 ppm and 500ppm); and (7) putrescine (4 mM and 6mM). These compounds were applied at the anthesis and grain-filling stages to enhance physio-biochemical traits and yield attributes of wheat (Triticum aestivum ) cvs GW-11 and GW-496 under terminal heat stress.

High-strength carbon fibers were recovered by a new method, involving the decomposition of the thermosetting resin part of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) by heating it in a mixture of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH). Alkali molten hydroxide was prepared by heating the mixture of NaOH and KOH at various ratios (NaOH: KOH = 1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, 0:1) at 400C, and the CFRP was then heated with the aforementioned alkali molten hydroxide under a nitrogen atmosphere at 200-400C for 0-90 min. Subsequently, the CFRP was washed with distilled water and filtered to recover the carbon fibers, and its tensile strength was estimated.
