A story of oedemas.

The Waldmann's disease is a primitive intestinal lymphangectasia. This exsudative enteropathy initiates a protein leakage by the digestive tract. Clinically, this syndrome is characterised by oedemas and biologically by hypoprotidemia and loss of lymphocytes T CD4+, which increases a risk for infections. Here, we describe a patient's case for whom the protein loss was aggravated by a nephrotic syndrome.

Less invasive approaches have recently been explored in an attempt to reduce this risk.

Citrin deficiency-The East-side story.

J Inherit Metab Dis

November 2024

University Children's Hospital Zurich and Children's Research Center, University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.

Article Synopsis
  • - Citrin deficiency (CD) is a metabolic disorder caused by mutations in the SLC25A13 gene, which affects a protein responsible for transporting certain amino acids in mitochondria.
  • - Initially identified in East Asia as similar to citrullinemia type 1, CD impacts various metabolic processes like glycolysis and ureagenesis, revealing its complexity beyond just a urea cycle disorder.
  • - The review emphasizes the global prevalence of CD and highlights its importance in diagnosing infants with cholestasis and patients with unexplained hyperammonemia, which can influence emergency treatment approaches.

This study presents a new approach for identifying myeloperoxidase (MPO) inhibitors with strong in vivo efficacy. By combining inhibitor-like rules and structure-based virtual screening, the pipeline achieved a 70% success rate in discovering diverse, nanomolar-potency reversible inhibitors and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) scavengers. Mechanistic analysis identified RL6 as a genuine MPO inhibitor and RL7 as a potent HOCl scavenger.

This article provides a report of a case of organ dysfunction, myonecrosis, rhabdomyolysis, multifocal ischemic cerebral infarcts, and cerebral edema after a patient's use of xylazine and fentanyl. Within the US opioid epidemic, xylazine is emerging as a troubling national sub-story. The prevalence of xylazine within illicitly manufactured opioids and the proportion of opioid-involved overdose deaths with detected xylazine are rising dramatically, the latter increasing 276% between 2019 and 2022.
