Based on first-principle calculations, the stability, electronic structure, optical absorption, and modulated electronic properties by different interlayer distances or by external electric fields of bilayer α-GeTe are systemically investigated. Results show that van der Waals (vdW) bilayer α-GeTe has an indirect band structure with the gap value of 0.610 eV, and α-GeTe has attractively efficient light harvesting. Interestingly, along with the decrease of interlayer distances, the band gap of bilayer α-GeTe decreases linearly, due to the enhancement of interlayer vdW interaction. In addition, band gap transition is originated from the electric field-induced near free-electron gas (NFEG) under the application of positive electrical fields. However, when the negative electric fields are applied, there is no NFEG. On account of these characteristics of bilayer α-GeTe, a possible data storage device has been designed. These results indicate that bilayer α-GeTe has a potential to work in new electronic and optoelectronic devices.

The nonlinear optical response in graphene is finding increasing applications in nanophotonic devices. The activation and enhancement of second harmonic generation (SHG) in graphene, which is generally forbidden in monolayer and AB-stacked bilayer graphene due to their centrosymmetry, is of urgent need for nanophotonic applications. Here, we present a comprehensive study of SHG performance of twisted multilayer graphene structures based on stacking engineering.

When combined with certain metal species, films of amorphous Ge or Si can have their typical crystallization temperatures decreased, by a factor of three or four, down to ~ 200 °C. The phenomenon is called metal-induced crystallization (MIC) and, since its first observation in the late 1960's, shows a great technological potential in producing (poly-)crystalline films of Ge or Si onto low-melting point substrates under reduced energy conditions. From the scientific point of view, the microscopic mechanisms behind the MIC phenomenon (still) represents a scientific challenge, where most of the proposed models are invariably influenced by the samples details giving the impression that they only apply to very specific metal-semiconductor combinations and/or circumstances.

The proliferation of multi-platform network information has expanded communication channels for users, enabling the integration and dissemination of information across both Social Networking Services (SNS)-type app and Instant Message (IM)-type app. With the intensification of convergent communication, some users in the two types of apps show active alternation in spreading information to each other's platforms. The study of the evolution trend of information in different platforms is of great practical significance for the mastery of the communication law.

Nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) incorporating atomic or molecular layer van der Waals materials can support multimode resonances and exotic nonlinear dynamics. Here we investigate nonlinear coupling of closely spaced modes in a bilayer (2L) molybdenum disulfide (MoS) nanoelectromechanical resonator. We model the response from a drumhead resonator using equations of two resonant modes with a dispersive coupling term to describe the vibration induced frequency shifts that result from the induced change in tension.

Monoterpenes (MTs), the major constituents of plant essential oils, cover a broad spectrum of biological activities through their interaction with biomembranes. MTs are highly hydrophobic substances with a net electrical dipole, but are not clearly amphipathic. As a result, they aggregate at increasing concentrations in aqueous media, and in membrane environments their behavior changes from dynamics modulators to disruptors.
