For polarized light to inform behaviour, the typical range of degrees of polarization observable in the animal's natural environment must be above the threshold for detection and interpretation. Here, we present the first investigation of the degree of linear polarization threshold for orientation behaviour in a nocturnal species, with specific reference to the range of degrees of polarization measured in the night sky. An effect of lunar phase on the degree of polarization of skylight was found, with smaller illuminated fractions of the moon's surface corresponding to lower degrees of polarization in the night sky. We found that the South African dung beetle can orient to polarized light for a range of degrees of polarization similar to that observed in diurnal insects, reaching a lower threshold between 0.04 and 0.32, possibly as low as 0.11. For degrees of polarization lower than 0.23, as measured on a crescent moon night, orientation performance was considerably weaker than that observed for completely linearly polarized stimuli, but was nonetheless stronger than in the absence of polarized light.

Increasing the degree of freedom for quantum entanglement within tensor networks can enhance the depiction of the essence in many-body systems. However, this enhancement comes with a significant increase in computational complexity and critical slowing down, which drastically increases time consumption. This work converts a quantum tensor network algorithm into a classical circuit on the Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and arranges the computing unit with a dense parallel design, efficiently optimizing the time consumption.

In this study, corn starch esters were obtained by a novel methodology using oleic acid as an esterifying agent and L(+)-tartaric acid as both catalyst and esterifying agent. The degree of substitution (DS) was determined along the reaction time to control the level of substitution achieved (up to 0.33), while all the other reaction parameters were maintained constant.

Light-matter interaction has been profoundly studied for sample material classification. However, the optical classification of the sample through the polarized light-matter interaction remains underexplored. It is limited to the measurement of intensity instead of the angle of polarized light (AOP) for its degree of polarization.

Endothelial cells under disturbed flow release extracellular vesicles to promote inflammatory polarization of macrophages and accelerate atherosclerosis.

Background: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from endothelial cells (ECs) are increasingly recognized for their role in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. ECs experience varying degrees and types of blood flow depending on their specific arterial locations. In regions of disturbed flow, which are predominant sites for atherosclerotic plaque formation, the impact of disturbed flow on the secretion and function of ECs-derived EVs remains unclear.

Hybrid continuous-variable (CV) and discrete-variable (DV) entanglement is an essential quantum resource of hybrid quantum information processing, which enables one to overcome the intrinsic limitations of CV and DV quantum protocols. Besides CV and DV quantum variables, introducing more degrees of freedom provides a feasible approach to increase the information carried by the entangled state. Among all the degrees of freedom of photons, orbital angular momentum (OAM) has potential applications in enhancing the communication capacity of quantum communication and precision of quantum measurement.
