Green synthesis of low-cost graphene oxide-nano zerovalent iron composite from solid waste for photocatalytic removal of antibiotics.

iScience

December 2024

Enviromicrobiology, Ecotoxicology and Ecotechnology Research Laboratory (3E-MicroToxTech Lab), Department of Ecological Studies, University of Kalyani, Kalyani, Nadia 741235 West Bengal, India.

This study develops a graphene oxide-nano zerovalent iron (GO-nZVI) composite for the efficient removal of tetracycline and ciprofloxacin from water. The composite was synthesized using sugarcane bagasse as the matrix for graphene oxide (GO) and Sal leaf extract to reduce iron into nano zerovalent iron (nZVI). Microscopic analysis confirmed multiple GO layers with nZVI particles on their surface, while XRD and Raman spectroscopy verified the crystalline nature of the composite.

Introduction: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) derived from natural sources have garnered significant attention due to their unique properties and eco-friendly production methods. With lung cancer remaining a major global health issue, there is a continuous need for novel and effective therapeutic approaches beyond conventional treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies.

Objective: This study aims to synthesize AgNPs using plant extracts from Gymnema sylvestre, Moringa oleifera, and Azadirachta indica and to evaluate their anticancer activity, particularly their effects on gene expression in A549 lung cancer cells.

Characteristics of naturally woven Waru bark fiber for eco-friendly composite reinforcement.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Advanced Engineering Materials and Composite Research Centre (AEMC), Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia, 43400 UPM Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia.

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of Waru bark fiber (WBF) as a reinforcement material for composite. To achieve this aim, WBF was extracted using a conventional process, ensuring purity, and then characterized for physical, mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Microstructure analysis was performed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) to show uniform and exceptional fiber sheets with naturally woven fiber shapes.

Complete eradication of aggressive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) still remains a major challenging problem due to numerous resistance properties of cancer stem cells (CSC) which is crucially responsible for tumor recurrence and metastasis. This challenge causes a high demand for the emergence of novel targeted treatment modalities for improved therapeutic efficacies. Phytochemicals derived from plants proves to be a wide reservoir of important drug candidates which have the potential to impede multiple aspects of malignant growth and progression.

A Novel cold-active chitin deacetylase from Shewanella psychrophila WP2 (SpsCDA) was overexpressed in Escherichia coli BL21 and employed for deacetylation of chitin to chitosan. The produced chitosan was characterized, and its antifungal activity was investigated against Fusarium oxysporum. The purified recombinant SpsCDA appeared as a single band on SDS-PAGE at approximately 60 kDa, and its specific activity was 92 U/mg.
