Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

University of Southern California, San Diego, USA.

Background: Recruitment of demographically diverse participants into Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials, encompassing both screening and randomization, remains a consistent and persistent challenge contributing to underrepresentation of certain groups. Despite the exciting prospects of identifying therapeutic interventions for biomarker-eligible, cognitively unimpaired individuals, these studies grapple with the inherent complexities of AD trials coupled with intricate and time-consuming screening processes. Addressing this the issue of underrepresentation necessitates concerted and intentional efforts that prioritize inclusivity and equitable access to enroll adults meeting study criteria, reflecting the demographic and social diversity of North America.

Background: Projected Alzheimer's disease (AD) prevalence is expected to fourfold by 2050. With the escalating numbers of individuals affected by neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease (PD) and AD, associated challenges encompass increased burdens on individuals and families, societal and political implications and economic impacts. Integrating patient and caregiver perspectives is essential to creating comprehensive, patient-centered care models that promote well-being and resilience in the face of degenerative neurological diseases such as AD.

We also examined online-based recruitment strategies focused on older adults reported in relevant published studies to compare with our experiences.

Background: People living with dementia (PLWD) are high utilizers of acute illness and emergency care, with over 50% of the more than 6 million people with Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease related dementia (ADRD) visiting an emergency department (ED) annually. While the ED plays an important role meeting the urgent and acute needs of PLWD and their caregivers, presence of ADRD is often not well recognized and ED visits are associated with significant adverse outcomes for PLWD. Despite these factors, research on the emergency care needs of PLWD is extremely limited.
