Background: Open articular fractures are an important issue due to their increasing incidence, along with the rise in motorcycle accidents. Oncology experience with allograft in orthopedics may be extended to cases of traumatic bone loss.

Clinical Case: A 37-year-old man with an open fracture of the distal femur and proximal tibia presented a massive bone loss of the lateral femoral condyle after a motorcycle accident. Following Damage Control Surgery, a considerable lateral femoral condyle allograft was used to restore the joint anatomy.

Results: After an intensive rehabilitation program and two subsequent arthroscopic arthrolyses, the patient resumed walking without aids and recovered from stiffness (R.O.M. 0-130°). An MRI performed at median follow-up, revealed a favorable integration of the allograft.

Discussion: Allografts are a reasonable reconstructive option for young individuals with massive bone loss. An appropriately sized allograft is essential to restore an acceptable function as seen in the herein case.

Purpose: While treatment modalities for Maisonneuve fractures involving the proximal third of the fibula are established, no studies to date have reported outcomes associated with syndesmotic-only fixation of middle third fibular shaft fractures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate outcomes associated with syndesmotic-only fixation in the treatment of Maisonneuve fractures involving the middle third of the fibula.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on 257 cases of syndesmotic ankle instability with associated fibular fractures at a level 1 trauma center between 2013 and 2023.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to establish an international consensus statement on the indications for the addition of a patellofemoral joint arthroplasty (PFJA) in patients with a unicondylar knee arthroplasty (UKA) and symptomatic progression of patellofemoral compartment osteoarthritis.

Materials And Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted, and the results used to inform the development of a statement by an expert working group. This was then evaluated and modified, using a Delphi process, by members of the European Knee Society (EKS).

Iliosacral screw osteosynthesis - state of the art.

Arch Orthop Trauma Surg

January 2025

Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, University Medical Center Mainz, Mainz, Germany.

Iliosacral screw osteosynthesis is a widely recognized technique for stabilizing unstable posterior pelvic ring injuries, offering notable advantages, including enhanced mechanical stability, minimal invasiveness, reduced blood loss, and lower infection rates. However, the procedure presents technical challenges due to the complex anatomy of the sacrum and the proximity of critical neurovascular structures. While conventional fluoroscopy remains the primary method for intraoperative guidance, precise preoperative planning using multiplanar reconstructions and three-dimensional volume rendering is crucial for ensuring accurate placement of iliosacral or transsacral screws.

Multifunctional electrospinning periosteum: Development status and prospect.

J Biomater Appl

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of New Textile Materials and Advanced Processing Technologies, Wuhan Textile University, Wuhan, China.

In the repair of large bone defects, loss of the periosteum can result in diminished osteoinductive activity, nonunion, and incomplete regeneration of the bone structure, ultimately compromising the efficiency of bone regeneration. Therefore, the research and development of tissue-engineered periosteum which can replace the periosteum function has become the focus of current research. The functionalized electrospinning periosteum is expected to mimic the natural periosteum and enhance bone repair processes more effectively.

Dasatinib and Quercetin Limit Gingival Senescence, Inflammation, and Bone Loss.

Department of Periodontics, School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA.

Cellular senescence has emerged as one of the central hallmarks of aging and drivers of chronic comorbidities, including periodontal diseases. Senescence can also occur in younger tissues and instigate metabolic alterations and dysfunction, culminating in accelerated aging and pathological consequences. Senotherapeutics, such as the combination of dasatinib and quercetin (DQ), are being increasingly used to improve the clinical outcomes of chronic disorders and promote a healthy life span through the reduction of senescent cell burden and senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP).
