Inflammation in the Peri-ACS Period: Ready for Prime Time?

Curr Atheroscler Rep

December 2024

Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, New York University Langone Medical Center, NYU Langone Health System, 550 1st Ave, New York, NY, 10010, USA.

Inflammation has been demonstrated to negatively impact patients in the peri-ACS period. This narrative review outlines the inflammatory response in ACS, highlighting the role of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway following acute plaque rupture and coronary intervention and its potential as a pharmacologic target. RECENT: nvestigators have leveraged medications targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome currently used for other inflammatory pathologies, including colchicine, tocilizumab and anakinra.

Our previous study has shown that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) were associated with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy-related interstitial lung disease (IIM-ILD). Colchicine plays an anti-inflammatory role mainly by inhibiting the activity and chemotaxis of neutrophils. This study aims to verify therapeutic effects and mechanism of colchicine in IIM-ILD.

Plant growth Enhancement in Colchicine-Treated Tomato Seeds without Polyploidy Induction.

Plant Mol Biol

December 2024

Departamento de Biotecnología y Bioingeniería, Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional, Ciudad de Mexico, 07360, México.

Plant breeding plays a pivotal role in the development of improved tomato cultivars, addressing various challenges faced by this crop worldwide. Tomato crop yield is affected by biotic and abiotic stress, including diverse pathogens and pests, extreme temperatures, drought, and soil salinity, thus affecting fruit quality, and overall crop productivity. Through strategic plant breeding approaches, it is possible to increase the genetic diversity of tomato cultivars, leading to the development of varieties with increased resistance to prevalent diseases and pests, improved tolerance to environmental stress, and enhanced adaptability to changing agroclimatic conditions.

Gout is a disease caused by hyperuricemia, characterized by inflammation reactions triggered by macrophage polarization. Colchicine is a commonly used drug for gout treatment, but its mechanism of action remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the regulatory effect of colchicine on macrophage polarization to enhance the therapeutic effectiveness against gout inflammation.

Colchicine reduces neointima formation and VSMC phenotype transition by modulating SRF-MYOCD activation and autophagy.

Acta Pharmacol Sin

December 2024

Anhui Provincial International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Major Metabolic Diseases and Nutritional Interventions, Key Laboratory of Metabolism and Regulation for Major Diseases of Anhui Higher Education Institutes, School of Food and Biological Engineering, Hefei University of Technology, Hefei, 230601, China.

Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) phenotype transformation significantly contributes to vascular intimal hyperplasia. However, effective preventive and therapeutic measures are lacking. Colchicine, a binary alkaloid derived from Colchicum autumnale, is traditionally used for treating inflammatory diseases.
