AI Article Synopsis

  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of safety devices in reducing needlestick injuries among healthcare workers.
  • An integrative literature review was conducted, analyzing articles from 2000 to 2016 on the topic of needlestick injuries and safety measures.
  • The findings indicated that passive safety devices are effective in lowering injury rates, especially when paired with proper worker training.

Article Abstract

Objective: To identify in the literature the efficacy of needlesticks with safety devices to reduce the occurrence of occupational accidents with exposure to biological material among health workers.

Method: Integrative literature review, structured in the stages: Guiding question, search, categorization of studies, evaluation, discussion and interpretation of results, and synthesis of knowledge. Search for original articles and systematic reviews on the main bases of the Health area, published from 2000 to 2016 in Portuguese, English and Spanish, with descriptors: needlesticks injuries, exposure to biological agents, needles, protective devices, occupational accidents, accident prevention and health personnel.

Results: We selected eleven articles, most characterized the passive safety devices as more effective in reducing the occurrence of injuries by needlesticks.

Conclusion: The use of needlesticks with safety devices reduces the occurrence of accidents, bringing greater solvency when combined with the training of workers.

Background: The Magenta Elevate is a 9-F, self-expanding, catheter-mounted pump delivered sheathed through a commercially available 10-F femoral introducer over the wire to the left ventricle (LV), providing temporary hemodynamic support up to an equivalent of normal cardiac output.

Objectives: The authors sought to assess the feasibility and outcomes of Elevate-supported high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (HR-PCI) in a first-in-human study and study the hemodynamic impact of high-output support during prolonged interventional left main coronary artery (LM) occlusions.

Methods: In this study, 14 patients underwent Elevate-supported HR-PCI, with 8 patients undergoing 20 prolonged (39 ± 16 seconds) balloon occlusions of an unprotected LM.

Experiencing side effects when wearing N95/P2 masks has negative impacts on health workers and increases exposure to pathogens. While side effects of wearing P2/N95 masks have been reported previously, these masks have never been used as widely as during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examines Australian hospital nurses' experiences and perceptions of P2/N95 mask usage and its impacts on patient care at a time when P2/N95 masks were widely used.
