The utilization of biochar as a relatively efficient sorbent or stationary phase for the separation and preconcentration of a wide range of analytes represents an innovative approach in current sample pretreatment methods. Appropriate pre- and post-pyrolysis modification of the input precursor and pyrolysis product, respectively, allows targeted design of the physicochemical properties and sorption characteristics of the resulting sorbent. The present work deals with the preparation of pyrolysis materials based on unmodified cattail leaf biomass (BC) and its Mg-modified analogue (MgBC) by a slow pyrolysis process at 500 °C and a residence time of 1 h in a pyrolysis reactor.

The presence of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs), such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, additives, and polar pesticides in sediments of rivers and lakes highly impacted by anthropogenic activities makes sediments a secondary source of contamination for aquatic ecosystems. Considering this, a method for analyzing 44 TrOCs of diverse nature (including five transformation products, 13 pharmaceuticals, five personal care products, 14 pesticides, and seven additives) was developed and validated. It is based on extraction by pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), followed by purification and pre-concentration by solid phase extraction (SPE) and quantification by liquid chromatography coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (LC-QqQMS).

The limitation of Liquid-liquid micro-extraction (LLME) procedures can be the need for the use of a dispersive solvent which should be soluble in both of aqueous and organic phases. In this research, a new method named SUPRA-based LLME, is introduced which uses supra molecular solvent (SUPRA), as an environmentally friendly solvent, for quantitative and selective extraction of Co ions from its aqueous solution via liquid-liquid micro-extraction process. The aqueous immiscible SUPRA phase, composed of vesicles of decanoic acid was synthesized via ex-situ procedure and used as a single liquid phase.

Lead ion (Pb) pollution is a critical global issue due to its ability to accumulate in the human body, resulting in severe health problems. Despite extensive research efforts devoted to the detection of Pb contamination, practical, rapid, and field-deployable sensors for Pb is yet to be developed to effectively safeguard the environment and public health. Herein, a label-free affinity-based sensing device is developed based on printed circuit board (PCB) for low-cost, easy-to-use, and real-time on-site detection of Pb ions.

Electroextraction (EE) encompasses a range of sample preparation methods whose effectiveness, selectivity, and efficiency are significantly influenced by the physical-chemical characteristics of analytes, samples, and instrumental conditions. This article explores, for the first time, various strategies aimed at enhancing the extraction efficiency of a recent approach of EE utilizing a paper point (PP) combined with a hollow fiber (HF) (abbreviated as PP-HF-EE) to extract various cationic and anionic model compounds from water samples. The study also explores, experimentally, the impact of agitation, organic filter composition, PP diameter, and PP brand on extraction performance, and proves that all these factors are quite important, especially when digital image analysis is utilized for determination.
