A critical metaphor for the development, implementation and penetration of autonomous machine systems into the world of human work is presented. Most especially, the ' concept is articulated which argues that the expropriation of human pre-eminence will be marked by a series of threshold events, some of which are, even now becoming evident. In particular, it indicates that there will be a watershed event in which differing and distinct expressions of applied autonomous systems will spontaneously coalesce to produce an emergent, general artificial intelligence.

More than 150 years since Charles Darwin published "On the Origin of Species", gradual evolution by natural selection is still not fully reconciled with the apparent sudden appearance of complex structures, such as the bat wing, with highly derived functions. This is in part because developmental genetics has not yet identified the number and types of mutations that accumulated to drive complex morphological evolution. Here, we consider the experimental manipulations in laboratory model systems that suggest tissue interdependence and mechanical responsiveness during limb development conceptually reduce the genetic complexity required to reshape the structure as a whole.

Gregor Mendel's classic paper, Versuche über Pflanzen-Hybriden (Experiments on Plant Hybrids), was published in 1866, hence 2016 is its sesquicentennial. Mendel completed his experiments in 1863 and shortly thereafter began compiling the results and writing his paper, which he presented in meetings of the Natural Science Society in Brünn in February and March of 1865. Mendel owned a personal copy of Darwin's Origin of Species, a German translation published in 1863, and it contains his marginalia.

This article provides an introduction to the special issue on Darwin and psychology at the bicentennial of his birth and the sesquicentennial of his publication of On the Origin of Species. His core contributions, as viewed today, were his theory of natural selection, his naturalistic philosophy, and his mass of evidence for evolutionary change. A brief summary of Darwin's life is also presented.
