The aim of this work was to evaluate phytotoxicity of the thiophene derivatives against three persistent weeds of a high degree of resistance ( Cav. L., and ) as well as their ecotoxicological impact on . In addition, was measured. Two of eight described aminophosphonates, namely dimethyl -(2-methoxyphenyl)amino(2-thienyl)methylphosphonate () and dimethyl -(-butyl)- (2-thienyl)methylphosphonate (), have never been reported before. The phytotoxicity of tested aminophosphonates toward their potential application as soil-applied herbicides was evaluated according to the OECD 208 Guideline. Ecotoxicological properties of investigated compounds were made using the OSTRACODTOXKIT and Microtox tests. Obtained results showed that four aminophosphonates have interesting herbicidal properties and -(2-methylphenyl)amino- (2-thienyl)methylphosphonate () was found to kill efficiently the most resistant plant . None of the tested compounds showed important toxicity against . However, their toxic impact on was significantly elevated. The aminophosphonate showed herbicidal potential and it is not toxic against tested bacteria (EC over 1000 mg/L). It was found to be moderately toxic against ostracods [mortality 48% at 10 mg/kg of soil dry weight (s.d.w.)] and this problem should be solved by the use of the controlled release from a polymeric carrier.

The fabricating of extremely effective, economical, ecologically safe, and reusable nanoparticle (NP) catalysts for the removal of water pollution is urgently needed. This study, spectroscopically optimizes the process parameters for the biogenic synthesis of AgNP catalysts using Cledrdendrum infortunatum leaf extract. The optimization of several synthesis parameters was systematically studied using UV-Vis spectroscopy to identify the ideal conditions for AgNPs formation.

Ecological effects of micro/nanoplastics on plant-associated food webs.

Trends Plant Sci

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Plant Diversity and Specialty Crops, Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Menglun, Yunnan, 666303, China. Electronic address:

Micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) contamination is a potential threat to global biodiversity and ecosystem functions, with unclear ecological impacts on aboveground (AG) and belowground (BG) food webs in terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we discuss the uptake, ingestion, bioaccumulation, and ecotoxicological effects of MNPs in plants and associated AG-BG biota at various trophic levels. We propose key pathways for MNPs transfer between the AG-BG food webs and elaborate their impact on terrestrial ecosystem multifunctionality.

Electronic address:

The high global production combined with low recycling rates of polystyrene (PS) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) contributes to the abundance of these commonly used plastics in soil, including as microplastics (MPs). However, the combined effects of MPs and heavy metals, such as arsenic (As) on earthworms are poorly understood. Here, we show that neither PS nor LDPE altered the effects of As on the survival, growth, and reproduction of the earthworm Eisenia fetida.

The growing use of products containing rare earth elements (REEs) may lead to higher environmental emissions of these elements, which can potentially enter aquatic systems. Praseodymium (Pr) and europium (Eu) are widely used REEs with various applications. However, their ecotoxicological impacts remain largely unexplored, with poorly understood risks to wildlife.

Toxic effects of tetracycline on non-target lichen .

J Toxicol Environ Health A

December 2024

Department of Environmental Sciences, Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas, Akademija, Lithuania.

Tetracycline (TC) antibiotics are one of the class of drugs widely used in clinical practice but also constitute a significant environmental concern. However, the adverse effects of TC on non-target organisms have not been well studied. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of exposure to high levels of TC on thalli of lichens to determine the impact on (1) physiological parameters including integrity of cell membranes, photosynthetic efficiency and viability, (2) oxidative stress response such as membrane lipid peroxidation, and (3) enzymatic antioxidant activities as catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR).
