Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) can present a high viscosity and thixotropic behavior when dispersed in water. In this work, CNF isolated from sugarcane bagasse and modified by N-oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMPO) oxidation was added to a solution of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). This process produced an unexpected viscosity due to a synergistic effect that was observed macroscopically through rheology analysis. The phenomenon known as depletion flocculation was observed, which was caused by the reduction of the excluded volume. The interactions of the system were studied by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), optical microscopy, and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), which demonstrated the presence of the particle/polymer repulsion and subsequent formation of domains composed of aligned micro and nanocellulose particles clusters and nanofibers distributed throughout the sample, forming a percolated 3D structure responsible for a strong gelling and colloidal stability.

The primary goal of the current work was to construct pH-sensitive nano and microcomposite hydrogel beads based on alginate (AL), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), biochar (BC), and two Moroccan clays: Ghassoul (swelling SW) and red (not swelling NSW) nano and microhybrid. The adsorbents, SW + AL, SW + AL + BC, SW + AL + CMC, NSW + AL, NSW + AL + BC, NSW + AL + CMC, AL, and AL + CMC were prepared for the adsorption of the antibiotic sulfadiazine (SDZ). The test samples were characterized using a variety of techniques, including X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), IR spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), with the molecular structures of the studied additives geometrically optimized using the DFT/B3LYP method and the function 6-311G(d).

Multifunctional pH-responsive films were fabricated via layer-by-layer deposition of gelatin, chitosan, and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), incorporating selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and beetroot extract (BTE), to monitor and preserve beef freshness. SeNPs were synthesized and characterized via various techniques. BTE exhibited promising functional properties, and films demonstrated a significant color transition from red to yellow across pH 2-14.

Passerini reaction was advantageously exploited to hydrophobize carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and alginates (ALG) by employing various hydrophobic aldehydes and isocyanides. The Passerini reaction, carried out in ecofriendly conditions, allowed to design never described twofold hydrophobized polysaccharide derivatives via the covalent grafting of two hydrophobic moieties. The consumption of dietary emulsifiers, including polysorbate 80 (P80) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), has raised safety concerns due to its interaction with the intestinal microbiome. This study demonstrated that increasing concentrations of P80 and CMC added to a dynamic four-stage gut microbiota model (BFBL gut simulator) altered the microbiome composition and impacted epithelial integrity in a dose-dependent manner. 16S rDNA amplicon-based metagenomics analysis revealed that these emulsifiers increased microbial groups with proinflammatory capacities while decreasing microbial taxa known to enhance barrier function.
