Central to the development of universal learning systems is the ability to solve multiple tasks without retraining from scratch when new data arrives. This is crucial because each task requires significant training time. Addressing the problem of continual learning necessitates various methods due to the complexity of the problem space.

Regressions on quantum neural networks at maximal expressivity.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Departamento de Física, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Avda. de la Universidad 30, 28911, Leganés, Spain.

Considering a universal deep neural network organized as a series of nested qubit rotations, accomplished by adjustable data re-uploads we analyze its expressivity. This ability to approximate continuous functions in regression tasks is quantified making use of a partial Fourier decomposition of the generated output and systematically benchmarked with the aid of a teacher-student scheme. While the maximal expressive power increases with the depth of the network and the number of qubits, it is fundamentally bounded by the data encoding mechanism.

Surface enzyme-polymerization endows Janus hydrogel tough adhesion and regenerative repair in penetrating orocutaneous fistulas.

Nat Commun

December 2024

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Anesthesiology and Brain Functional Modulation, Clinical Research Center for Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Translational Research Institute of Brain and Brain-Like Intelligence, Shanghai Fourth People's Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, China.

Penetrating orocutaneous or oropharyngeal fistulas (POFs), severe complications following unsuccessful oral or oropharyngeal reconstruction, remain complex clinical challenges due to lack of supportive tissue, contamination with saliva and chewed food, and dynamic oral environment. Here, we present a Janus hydrogel adhesive (JHA) with asymmetric functions on opposite sides fabricated via a facile surface enzyme-initiated polymerization (SEIP) approach, which self-entraps surface water and blood within an in-situ formed hydrogel layer (RL) to effectively bridge biological tissues with a supporting hydrogel (SL), achieving superior wet-adhesion and seamless wound plugging. The tough SL hydrogel interlocked with RL dissipates energy to withstand external mechanical stimuli from continuous oral motions like chewing and swallowing, thus reducing stress-induced damage.

Continuous decoupled redox electrochemical CO capture.

Nat Commun

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Construction and Healthy Operation and Maintenance of Deep Underground Engineering, Sichuan University & Shenzhen University, Chengdu, P.R. China.

Electrochemical CO capture driven by renewable electricity holds significant potential for efficient decarbonization. However, the widespread adoption of this approach is currently limited by issues such as instability, discontinuity, high energy demand, and challenges in scaling up. In this study, we propose a scalable strategy that addresses these limitations by transforming the conventional single-step electrochemical redox reaction into a stepwise electrochemical-chemical redox process.

Are Oral Somatostatin Receptor Ligands Moving Closer to Becoming a Reality?

Clin Endocrinol (Oxf)

December 2024

Departments of Endocrinology, Leeds Centre for Diabetes & Endocrinology, Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, Leeds, UK.

With the current therapeutic modalities available to endocrinologists, control of GH and IGF-I is now possible in almost all patients with acromegaly with multi-modality therapy. Despite biochemical control of GH and IGF-I, patients with acromegaly continue to experience impaired quality of life. Although there are likely multiple factors contributing to this dissatisfaction with current medical therapies, in particular the widely utilised injectable long-acting somatostatin receptor ligands (iSRL), is a contributor.
