Protein translation has emerged as a critical bottleneck for overall productivity of biological molecules. An augmentation of protein translation can be achieved by cell line engineering or by sophisticated vector design. However, for industrial process development purposes, identification of media additives that promote translation will be of great value, obviating the generation of new host platforms. Here, we examined the effect of low cadmium chloride concentrations on protein synthesis and cell line productivity. At low micromolar concentrations, cadmium chloride induced the mTOR pathway and promoted total protein synthesis in HEK 293T and CHO-K1 cells with minimal toxicity. In a parallel screening of kinase inhibitors for promoting protein expression, we identified the RSK1 inhibitor, BI-D1870, as having a transcription promoting activity on cytomegalovirus promoter-driven transgenes. Fed-batch analyses of CHO-K1 cells producing the anticoagulant factor tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) demonstrated that inclusion of cadmium chloride alone and particularly in combination with BI-D1870 improved overall yields of tPA by more than two-fold with minimal effect on cell growth. We, therefore, underscore the use of cadmium alone and in combination with BI-D1870 for improving bioproduction yields.

Cadmium (Cd), one of the toxic heavy metals, is of great importance for public health due to its use in many industrial areas. Propolis is a natural product with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties collected from plants by honey bees. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective role of propolis against the potential toxic effects of cadmium chloride in blood, liver and kidney tissues.

Serious neurological disorders were associated with cadmium toxicity. Hence, this research aimed to investigate the potential neuroprotective impacts of the ethanolic extracts of Citrus aurantium unripe fruits and leaves (CAF and CAL, respectively) at doses 100 and 200 mg/kg against cadmium chloride-provoked brain dysfunction in rats for 30 consecutive days. HPLC for natural pigment content revealed that CAF implied higher contents of Chlorophyll B, while the CAL has a high yield of chlorophyll A and total carotenoid.

Soil pollution by microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd) poses significant threats to agricultural production, yet their combined toxicity and underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we examined the effects of three types of MPs-polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene (PP)-with particle sizes of 150 μm and 10 μm, in combination with Cd stress (5 mg/kg) on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) growth.

Vascular-like tissues composed of cells maintaining their shape and structure at any position in a culture dish without the use of gels or other artificial materials are ideal vascular models to test the effects of candidate drugs on cells without adsorption by artificial materials and analysis of structural changes over time. In this study, we aimed to prepare fiber-shaped cell aggregates composed of human umbilical vein endothelial and mesenchymal stem cells as vascular pericytes anchored to the bottom of culture dishes at a defined location using our developed cell self-aggregation technique and dumbbell-shaped culture groove. The fiber-shaped cell aggregates maintained their shape for at least two weeks without rupture, and histological analysis revealed that they formed a unique tissue structure with a gapless endothelial layer on the outer surface and capillary-like structures oriented in the same direction as the long axis of the fiber in the medial side.
