The aim of this study was to investigate the skin anti-inflammatory activity of rose petal extract (RPE) and the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. Recently, flowers have been considered as dietary resources owing to their biological activities, such as inhibition of nephritis and hemorrhoids. The plant exerts various biological functions, including antioxidant and anti-microbiological activities. Herein, we confirmed the skin anti-inflammatory activity of RPE upon solar UV (sUV) exposure. RPE reduced sUV-induced COX-2 expression as well as expressions of several cytokines. Activation of MKK4-JNK, MEK-ERK, and MKK3-p38 signaling pathways, which are associated with cytokine production, was also attenuated by RPE treatment. We hypothesized these RPE-induced changes are because of its antioxidant activity, because RPE displayed drastic radical scavenging and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). Furthermore, high anthocyanins, polyphenols, and flavonoids contents were found in RPE. Hence, these results indicated the skin anti-inflammatory activity of RPE is because of antioxidant activity.

Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol (stilbenoid), which can be found in grape skin, red wine, blueberries, peanuts and others. The biological properties of resveratrol, in particular antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, estrogenic, vasorelaxant and cardioprotective activity, are the main reason for its importance in medicine and pharmacy. Despite all of its advantages, however, there are many problems related to this polyphenolic substance, such as low stability, water insolubility, poor bioavailability and fast metabolism.

Sustainable Skincare Innovation: Cork Powder Extracts as Active Ingredients for Skin Aging.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

January 2025

UCIBIO-Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit, Department of Drug Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, R. Jorge Viterbo Ferreira 228, 4050-313 Porto, Portugal.

: An emerging practice within the concept of circular beauty involves the upcycling of agro-industrial by-products. Cork processing, for instance, yields by-products like cork powder, which presents an opportunity to create value-added cosmetic ingredients. Building upon our previous research, demonstrating the antioxidant potential of hydroalcoholic extracts derived from two distinct cork powders (P0 and P1), in this work, aqueous extracts were prepared and analyzed.

: , a bacterium residing in hair follicles, triggers acne by inducing monocyte-mediated inflammatory cytokine production. Gedunin, a limonoid derived from (commonly known as neem), is renowned for its antifungal, antimalarial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. However, its role in mitigating -induced skin inflammation remains unexplored.

Key Laboratory of Synthetic and Biological Colloids, Ministry of Education, School of Chemical and Material Engineering, Jiangnan University, Wuxi 214122, China.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that has attracted global attention, and alkaloids from have been shown to have anti-inflammatory activity. Fermentation has been used for the structural modification of natural compounds to improve bioavailability and activity, but the AD therapeutic efficacy and mechanism of the fermented (FPN) are still unclear. The potential targets of FPN for AD were preliminarily screened using network pharmacology, and then PCR and WB were used to prove the therapeutic effect of FPN in AD.
