Purpose: Pectus arcuatum is an anterior chest wall deformity that requires transverse wedge sternotomy. Determining and delivering the correct cutting angle are crucial for successful correction. This report describes the early clinical experience with a novel cutting template technology able to deliver the optimal cutting angle.

Description: From patients' computed tomographic scans, the optimal cutting angle is obtained using computer-aided design. A template comprising slots tilted at the right cutting angle and a safety block to avoid damaging the posterior periosteum is printed through additive manufacturing.

Evaluation: The template allows surgeons to perform a precise wedge sternotomy, safely sparing the posterior periosteum in all patients, without complications. Postoperative chest roentgenograms and clinical photographs demonstrate optimal sternal realignment and cosmetic outcome. In this report, the mean operative time was 110 minutes. All patients were successfully discharged, with a mean length of stay of 4 days.

Conclusions: Transverse wedge sternotomy aided by a computer-aided design-devised cutting template may reduce the technical challenge of this procedure, thereby increasing its safety and reducing operative times and hospital stay. Further research on long-term patient outcomes is necessary.

Background: Virtual surgical planning (VSP) with simple cutting templates could help surgeons preoperatively plan scapula reconstructions in the vertical and horizontal orientations.

Methods: Virtually, eight defects were created in ten healthy mandibles and reconstructed with the subject-specific scapula vertically and horizontally. In the clinical series, 15 single-piece scapula mandible reconstructions planned with in-house VSP and guided with simple templates were compared with 15 freehand reconstructions.

Patient-specific templating (PST), which is a sister procedure to patient-specific instrumentation (PSI) but hospital-based, is relatively less complex and less expensive than robotics and navigation. However, there are some concerns about the PST including the process of preoperative planning, 3D printing and material, positioning of PST intraoperatively, availability, and clinical value. The purpose of this study was to validate the technical accuracy and reliability of the PST technique in the lab and to report the outcomes of clinical application.

Article Synopsis
  • The alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involves four key reactions and poses challenges in balancing Gibbs free energies of intermediates like HO*, O*, and HOO* at active sites.
  • A new high-entropy metal-organic framework using Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, and Y is developed via electrodeposition, resulting in the FeCoNiCuYP/C composite, which features an amorphous structure with several active sites.
  • This composite shows enhanced OER performance in alkaline solutions, with a low overpotential of 316 mV at 100 mA/cm², attributed to the optimized electronic structure and binding strengths facilitated by Co/Ni and Fe atom interactions.

African swine fever virus (ASFV) infection is causing devastating outbreaks globally; pig farming has suffered severe economic losses due to the ASFV. Currently, strict biosecurity control measures can mitigate the incidence of ASF. Rapid, cost-effective, and sensitive detection of ASFV can significantly reduce disease transmission and mortality.

Background: Breast cancer patients and their informal caregivers often report unmet psychosocial, relational, and physical health needs. Dyadic interventions may improve patient and caregiver outcomes, but few have been integrated into clinical care or designed for Black breast cancer patients and their female caregivers. We used the Health Equity Implementation Framework to design for dissemination by identifying facilitators and barriers to implementing a dyadic survivorship intervention delivered via video teleconferencing (e.
