Commensal bacteria affect host health by producing various metabolites from dietary carbohydrates via bacterial glycometabolism; however, the underlying mechanism of action remains unclear. Here, we identified Streptococcus salivarius as a unique anti-obesity commensal bacterium. We found that S.

Combined cross-linked enzyme aggregates (Combi-CLEAs) of β-Galactosidase (β-Gal) and Glucose Isomerase (GI) allow the transformation of d-lactose to lactose-fructose syrup through one-pot cascade biocatalytic reactions. Despite its promise, the low thermostability of β-Gal and high-temperature demands for GI limits this application. Trehalose is a protein-stabilizing disaccharide which has been utilized in immobilized enzyme systems to enhance protein thermostability.

Context: The efficacy of probiotics and diet management in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is controversial, and their relative effectiveness remains unclear.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of probiotics, diet management, and their combination on IBS.
Data Sources: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science were searched from inception to July 10, 2023, for relevant studies, including symptom relief, IBS-symptom severity score (-SSS), and IBS-quality of life measure (-QOL).

In a previous experiment, we showed that the odor of manure slurries could be improved by anaerobic incubation with the sugars glucose, lactose, and sucrose. This improvement was due to reductions in the concentrations of malodorants, including dimethyl disulfide, -cresol, -ethylphenol, indole, and skatole, and a shift to the production of fruity esters, including ethyl butyrate and propyl propanoate. Due to large concentrations of lactic acid produced by the sugar-amended manure slurries, we inferred that lactic acid bacteria were involved in improving the manure slurry odor.

Background: Cirrhosis is a medical condition marked by persistent liver damage, which leads to the development of fibrous tissue and compromised liver function. In the present study, we decided to investigate the possibility of a connection between the consumption of fermentable olig-, di-, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) and mortality rates in cirrhotic patients by utilizing data obtained from a prospective cohort study.
Methods: This cohort study enrolled 166 ambulatory patients from two hospitals in Tehran, Iran, between 2016 and 2018, and followed them up for 5 48 months until April 30, 2022.
