Initial evidence suggests that experiential avoidance (EA) mediates the relation between anxiety sensitivity (AS) and depression. We examined the AS-EA-depression pathway, examining both concurrent, and prospective (cross-lag), mediation models. Utilizing data from a study that examined the effects of exercise on AS ( = 60), we modeled depressive symptoms, EA, and AS over four time points. Time-varying predictors were disaggregated into between-subjects (each person's mean level of the predictor) and within-subjects change (each person's deviations, at each time point, from their mean level on the predictor) components. Tests of the concurrent relations were partially consistent with predictions, with mean EA levels, but not within-subjects changes in EA, partially mediating the relation between AS and depression symptom severity. However, the prospective, cross-lag mediation model, in which AS predicted future EA controlling for previous EA, and EA predicted future depression, controlling for previous depression, yielded no significant effects. These results suggest that observed between-subjects mediation findings, found here and in previous studies, may not replicate using more stringent, quasi-causal, cross-lag mediation analyses. These results highlight the importance of estimating causal pathways in mediation analyses. Clinical implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how personal growth (PG) influences the relationship between individual factors like parental bonds and experiences of loss, and how these factors affect parents' perceptions of their infants' behaviors.
  • Data was collected from over 2,000 new parents in Israel through self-report questionnaires at three different time points, highlighting changes in perceptions over the first year of the child's life.
  • Findings indicate that personal growth mediates the relationship between parental care and the perception of infant warmth, stressing the need for support programs to foster healthy parent-infant dynamics and suggesting further studies to explore these relationships over time.

Introduction: According to career construction theory, middle school students are in a critical phase of growth and exploration that requires self-reflection on their interests, values, and aspirations. Career adaptability is a key indicator of career development for middle school students and a crucial ability for achieving career success. Research indicates that many Chinese middle school students face significant hurdles in their career development, including a lack of motivation, limited self-awareness, and unclear career trajectories.

Introduction: Resilience, a pivotal construct in positive psychology, remains incompletely understood in its facilitation of learners' online engagement. This study aims to investigate the relationship between resilience, transactional distance, and Online Mathematics Learning Engagement (OMLE) among first-year university students.

Methods: Utilizing a cross-lagged path analysis approach, the study surveyed 612 first-year students.

Background: Research indicates that positive memories have a role in posttraumatic stress disorder's (PTSD) symptomatology and treatment. Following treatment development guidelines, a novel PTSD intervention - Processing of Positive Memories Technique (PPMT) - was developed and subsequently examined for its effects and feasibility in pilot studies. Extending this research, the proposed pilot randomized clinical trial with PPMT and Supportive Counseling (SC) arms will examine PPMT's effects on PTSD severity and biomarkers of stress systems' dysregulation (awakening salivary alpha amylase [sAA] and cortisol concentrations); examine mechanistic targets (affect) underlying PPMT's effects; and refine PPMT.

Background: This study aimed to examine the association between tooth loss and frailty among Chinese older adults and the mediating role of dietary diversity in this association.

Methods: Data from five waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey conducted between 2005 and 2018 were used. Path analyses were employed to assess both concurrent and cross-lagged relationships between tooth loss and frailty index while accounting for intrapersonal correlation.
