Published: December 2018

In this study, we propose a two-step strategy for tracking oil-spill trajectories. First, an X-band radar is established to monitor oil spills. Accordingly, we propose a radar image-processing technique for identifying the oil slicks from the nautical radar images. Second, we apply the SCHISM to determine the water surface elevations and currents at the event site and obtain the trajectories of the oil slicks using a Lagrangian particle-tracking method incorporated in the SCHISM. An oil-spill event caused by the container ship T. S. Taipei is used as a case study for testing the capability of the proposed oil-tracking strategy. The SCHISM simulation results for the fouled coastline obtained using the wind data from a nearby data buoy agree quite well with those obtained from field observations. However, the predicted fouled coastline based on the forecasted wind data is unsatisfactory. The reasons for the unsatisfactory prediction are discussed and revealed.

Background: Household air pollution is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease burden in women in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, little is known about exposures during pregnancy or the effect of clean cooking interventions on postpartum blood pressure trajectories.

Methods: The Ghana Randomized Air Pollution and Health Study (GRAPHS) randomized 1414 non-smoking women in the first and second trimesters to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or improved biomass stoves - vs control (traditional three-stone open fire).

State Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Boundary Layer Physics and Atmospheric Chemistry (LAPC), Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, 100029, China.

Elucidating the chemical composition, sources, and health risks of fine particulate matter (PM) is crucial for effectively preventing and controlling air pollution. This study collected PM samples in Linyi from November 10, 2021, to October 15, 2022, spanning the period of the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The analysis focused on seasonal variations in the chemical composition of PM, including water-soluble ions, inorganic elements, and carbonaceous aerosols.

Article Synopsis
  • The increasing production of oily wastewater from industries and oil spills is causing significant environmental issues, necessitating the need for effective oil-water separation technologies.
  • Recent advancements in materials with unique wettability properties (superhydrophilic/superoleophobic and superhydrophobic/superoleophilic) offer promising solutions for efficient oil-water separation.
  • This review discusses various system designs, categorizes them based on enclosed versus open-to-air scenarios, traces the evolution of these designs, and offers insights for future developments in oil-water separation technologies.

Strategic location model for oil spill response vessels (OSRVs) considering oil transportation and weather uncertainties.

In the event of oil spills in offshore oil and gas projects, containment and dispersion equipment must be sent to the affected areas within a critical time by vessels known as oil spill response vessels (OSRVs). Here, we developed an optimization tool, integrated with an oil spill trajectory simulation model, both in deterministic and stochastic alternatives, to support decision-making during the strategic planning of OSRV operations. The tool was constructed in Python using GNOME for oil spill simulations and the GUROBI to solve the optimization model.

A new ship tracing technology from oil spills based on multi-source data.

Mar Pollut Bull

October 2024

State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics, Second Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, Hangzhou 310012, China.

Oil spill from ship can cause serious pollution to the Marine environment, but it is very difficult to find and confirm the troublemaker. In order to determine the oil spill ship, this paper proposes a new method to trace the source of ship oil spills and find the suspected ship that spills oil based on SAR imagery, AIS data and related marine environment data. First, we filter AIS data based on position of oil spill areas on remote sensing imagery and convert oil spill areas into trajectory points.
