Dynamic leg length [DLL] is a resultant factor of anatomic leg length and lower limb movement that is measured by the distance from the hip to the heel, ankle, and forefoot during the gait cycle. The aim of this study was to present DLL measurement during normal gait. Forty healthy participants underwent a gait evaluation using a motion analysis system. The average DLLs were compared between sides during the gait cycle using the paired -test at 51 sample points. Time of maximal and minimal DLLs and the ratio between maximal and minimal DLLs during the gait cycle were calculated. DLLs were found to be consistent, indicated by a within standard deviation of <6.65 mm and by being symmetrical with no significant differences between sides [ > 0.103]. DLL patterns and time of maximal and minimal DLLs were established. The ratio between maximal DLLs during the stance phase and minimal DLLs during the swing phase was also defined and found to be symmetrical. Normative data of DLL measures were set with respect to magnitude and pattern during the gait cycle. These data might serve as a reference for abnormal gait deviation reflected by abnormal DLLs, thus promoting a new perspective in gait analysis.

Utilizing Rhythmic Haptic Cueing in Arm Swing Training to Improve Gait Speed Among Older Adults.

Ann Biomed Eng

December 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering, The Biorobotics and Biomechanics Lab, University of Maine, 168 College Ave, Orono, ME, 04469, USA.

Purpose: Current gait rehabilitation protocols for older adults typically attempt to effect changes in leg movements, while the role of arm movements is often ignored despite evidence of the neurological coupling of the upper and lower extremities. In the present work, we examine the effectiveness of a novel wearable haptic cueing system that targets arm swing to improve various gait parameters in older adults.

Methods: Twenty participants (  years) were recruited to analyze their gait during normal and fast walking without haptic cueing.

Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) have been commonly prescribed for stroke survivors with foot drop, but their impact on the contractions of paretic tibialis anterior (TA) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) has remained inconclusive. This study thus investigated the effect of AFOs on these muscle contractions in stroke survivors. The contractions of paretic TA and MG muscles were assessed in twenty stroke patients and compared between walking with and without AFOs, using a novel wearable dynamic ultrasound imaging and sensing system.

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the effects of posteriorstabilized (PS) and cruciate-retaining (CR) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) on early postoperative three-dimensional (3D) dynamic and kinematic characteristics in patients with unilateral knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Patients And Methods: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from 90 patients with unilateral TKA between February 2021 and September 2021 was conducted using a 3D kinematic analysis system before and six months after TKA. This patient group included 57 patients (10 males, 47 females; mean age: 69.

Background: Anterior tibial laxity is considered to be a risk factor for knee injuries, including anterior cruciate ligament ruptures. The anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction also aims to restore anterior tibial laxity. While anterior tibial laxity is considered to be linked to dynamic knee stability, the mechanisms connecting anterior tibial laxity to these stability issues are not fully understood.

This pilot study investigated the potential of a newly developed shoe design to improve gait parameters without altering muscle activity in healthy women. The shoe design features a V-shaped heel and a high-elasticity midsole, which are intended to enhance stability during heel contact and promote efficient load transfer throughout the gait cycle. Ten study participants underwent a randomized crossover design, wearing developed and general shoes during the trials.
