Background And Aim: To assess the detection rates of colonization in the gastric cardia with two commercial kits of rapid urease test: 5 min UFT300 and 24 h CLO test in H. pylori-infected patients.

Methods: Eighty consecutive dyspeptic patients with confirmed H. pylori infection (serology and C-urea breath test) were prospectively studied. During endoscopy, tissue samples using separate biopsy forceps from the cardia were taken for the UFT300 and CLO tests. The results of the UFT300 were read at 5 and 30 min, and those of the CLO test were read at 24 h.

Results: Of 80 enrolled patients, 17 (21.3%) and 44 (55%) had positive findings with the UFT300 at 5 and 30 min, respectively, while 72 (90%) had positive findings with the CLO test at 24 h. The CLO test is significantly more sensitive than the UFT300 in evaluating H. pylori status in the cardia. On comparing patients with and without carditis, the detection rates of the CLO test were similar (91.1% 88.6%; = 0.724), and the rates of the UFT300 were also similar at 5 and 30 min.

Conclusions: The rate of H. pylori colonization in the gastric cardia was 90% in H. pylori-infected patients detected with the CLO test. Although the UFT300 provides a more rapid reading of H. pylori status, the diagnostic yield of the CLO test is much higher than that of the UFT300. However, a positive result of the UFT300 may indicate a higher bacterial load in the cardia, which warrants a more effective therapeutic strategy.

Background: Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are well-designed highly selective pesticides that target nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. However, their extensive use, accumulation, and biomagnification pose significant risks to humans. Increasing evidence has suggested that NEOs may affect glucose homeostasis, but little research has linked NEOs exposure to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), which is the most common disease in pregnancy.

Four mononuclear bioefficient zinc coordination complexes [Zn(NN)](ClO) (-) involving chiral bidentate Schiff base ligands have been synthesized and characterized by IR, H, and C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. X-ray crystal structures of three of the zinc complexes revealed that the zinc metal ion is hexacoordinated, exhibiting a distorted octahedral geometry where both the nitrogen atoms (NN = pyridyl and imine) of imines are coordinated to the central zinc ion. The isolated zinc complexes were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity in vitro against , , and , displaying varying levels of growth inhibition.

Given the critical need to preserve agricultural sustainability, there is an urgent call to address fungal infections. Our study presents a promising approach by focusing on SIX (Secreted in Xylem) proteins as a pivotal target for the development of innovative fungicidal strategies. Within the sphere of this study, we meticulously scrutinize the antifungal efficacy of our synthesized Cu(II) complex formulated as [Cu(L1)(L2)](ClO), where L1 represents ()-cyclohexyl-(pyridine-2-xlmethylene) methanamine and L2H denotes cinnamic acid, compared against a commercially available fungicide comprising 4% hexaconazole and 68% zineb.

Abnormal fluctuations in blood biomarker levels serve as critical indicators of the disease. However, detecting endogenous substances in whole blood using fluorescent probes is challenging due to its complex composition. This challenge primarily arises from two factors: the high autofluorescence of whole blood and the intrinsic fluorescence of the probe, both contributing to significant background fluorescence in the detection system.

Clozapine/norclozapine plasma level ratio and cognitive functioning in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders: a systematic review.

Ther Adv Psychopharmacol

December 2024

Department of Community Mental Health, Mental Health Service Noord-Holland Noord, Alkmaar, The Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • Limited research exists on cognitive functioning in treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), and current findings on clozapine's effect on cognition are inconsistent, with a particular lack of studies on the CLO/NCLO ratio.
  • A systematic review identified 15 studies involving clozapine users, assessing their cognitive abilities through various tests and composite scores, with 11 studies deemed of fair quality.
  • A negative relationship was discovered between the CLO/NCLO ratio and certain cognitive abilities like attention and social cognition, while no significant correlations were found for other cognitive domains such as processing speed or working memory.
