- Nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) live in low-oxygen conditions and primarily use glycolysis, producing high amounts of lactate, which may lead to a new type of epigenetic modification known as lysine lactylation (Kla).
- Single-cell RNA sequencing indicated that intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) disrupts the balance between glycolysis and aerobic oxidation in NPCs.
- Extensive analysis identified over 3,500 lactylation sites on non-histone proteins, revealing a link between lactylated proteins and key cellular functions related to metabolism and signaling pathways, suggesting Kla may influence NPC cellular metabolism.
