Quick reorientation is an essential part of successful navigation. Despite growing attention to this ability, little is known about how reorientation happens in humans. To this aim, we recorded EEG from 34 participants. Participants were navigating a simple virtual reality plus-maze where at the beginning of each trial they were randomly teleported to either the North or the South alley. Results show that the teleportation event caused a quick reorientation effect over occipito-parietal areas as early as 100 ms; meaning that despite the known stochastic nature of the teleportation, participants built up expectations for their place of arrival. This result has important consequences for the optimal design of virtual reality locomotion.

Mitral regurgitation in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) is mainly due to systolic anterior motion (SAM) and may be abolished in most of the patients by extended myectomy alone. However, a minority of HOCM patients may present mitral regurgitation due to organic mitral valve (MV) anomalies (such as MV leaflet prolapse, chordal rupture, leaflet cleft, and fibrosis) which need to be addressed. In addition, when the thickness of the interventricular septum is not particularly pronounced, shallow myectomy may not be enough to eliminate SAM and additional procedures have been proposed, including MV replacement, anterior leaflet plication/extension, reorientation of papillary muscles, secondary chordae cutting, and edge-to-edge technique.

Throughout the day, humans react to multisensory events conveying both visual and auditory signals by rapidly reorienting their gaze. Several studies showed that sounds can impact the latency of visually guided saccades depending on when and where they are delivered. We found that unlocalized beeps delivered near the onset time of a visual target reduce latencies, more for early beeps and less for late beeps, however, this modulation is far weaker than for perceptual temporal judgments.

The bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) swims in viscous fluids by rotating several helical flagellar filaments, which are gathered in a bundle behind the cell during 'runs' wherein the cell moves steadily forward. In between runs, the cell undergoes quick 'tumble' events, during which at least one flagellum reverses its rotation direction and separates from the bundle, resulting in erratic motion in place and a random reorientation of the cell.
