Background: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a common therapy for many hematologic malignancies. While advances in transplant practice have improved cancer-specific outcomes, multiple and debilitating long term physical and psychologic effects remain. Patients undergoing allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (allo-BMT) are often critically ill at initial diagnosis and with necessary sequential treatments become increasingly frail and deconditioned.

The role of nutritional vitamin D in CKD-MBD in children and adults with CKD, on dialysis and after kidney transplantation - a European consensus statement.

Nephrol Dial Transplant

January 2025

Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation; Nephrology and Renal Transplantation Research Group, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium.

Vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and associates with poor outcomes. Current clinical practice guidelines recommend supplementation with nutritional vitamin D as for the general population. However, recent large-scale, clinical trials in the general population failed to demonstrate a benefit of vitamin D supplementation on skeletal or non-skeletal outcomes, fueling a debate on the rationale for screening for and correcting vitamin D deficiency, both in non-CKD and CKD populations.

The Fas-mediated apoptosis assay: From concept to clinical application.

J Immunol Methods

January 2025

Department of Pediatrics, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, OH, USA; Division of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Immune Deficiency, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, OH, USA. Electronic address:

Abnormal lymphocyte homeostasis underly several Inborn Errors of Immunity (IEoI). In vitro assessment of lymphocyte homeostasis is achieved by specific apoptosis assays reflective of specific homeostasis programs and pathways that are mediated through specific proteins. This review discusses those programs, pathways and proteins and describes the development and use of the in vitro Fas-mediated apoptosis assay, as it relates to the IEoI Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome (ALPS) and describes other disorders of lymphocyte homeostasis in the context of other forms of in vitro apoptosis assessment.

VAE-Surv: A novel approach for genetic-based clustering and prognosis prediction in myelodysplastic syndromes.

Comput Methods Programs Biomed

January 2025

Computational Biomedicine Unit, Department of Medical Sciences, University of Torino, Via Santena 19, 10126, Torino, Italy.

Background And Objectives: Several computational pipelines for biomedical data have been proposed to stratify patients and to predict their prognosis through survival analysis. However, these analyses are usually performed independently, without integrating the information derived from each of them. Clustering of survival data is an underexplored problem, and current approaches are limited for biomedical applications, whose data are usually heterogeneous and multimodal, with poor scalability for high-dimensionality.

Hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma in children and adolescents.

Blood Adv

January 2025

Univeristy of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama, United States.

Hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma (HSTCL) is an aggressive mature T-cell lymphoma characterized by significant hepatosplenomegaly, bone marrow involvement, and minimal or no lymphadenopathy. Primarily affecting young adults, it is exceptionally rare in children and adolescents. This makes diagnosis and treatment particularly challenging for pathologists and pediatric oncologists.
