Amorphous silicon has ideal properties for many applications in fundamental research and industry. However, the optical absorption is often unacceptably high, particularly for gravitational-wave detection. We report a novel ion-beam deposition method for fabricating amorphous silicon with unprecedentedly low unpaired electron-spin density and optical absorption, the spin limit on absorption being surpassed for the first time. At low unpaired electron density, the absorption is no longer correlated with electron spins, but with the electronic mobility gap. Compared to standard ion-beam deposition, the absorption at 1550 nm is lower by a factor of ≈100. This breakthrough shows that amorphous silicon could be exploited as an extreme performance optical coating in near-infrared applications, and it represents an important proof of concept for future gravitational-wave detectors.

A rear emitter with a p-type boron-doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon/nanocrystalline silicon [a-Si:H(p)/nc-Si:H(p)] stack was prepared for the silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cell to improve its short-circuit current density (). CO plasma treatment (CO PT) was applied to a-Si:H(p) to facilitate the crystallization of the subsequently deposited nc-Si:H(p). To evaluate the effect of the CO PT, two different nc-Si:H(p) layers with low and high crystallinity (χ) were investigated.

Five commercially available cut-resistant gloves were sourced from four different worldwide manufacturers which were advertised to contain graphene. A method was developed to assess the fibers composing each glove, including dissolution of the constituent fibers using sulfuric acid or liquid paraffin at elevated temperature, to extract and analyze particle additives. Scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was applied to fibers and extracted particles for morphological and elemental analysis; Raman spectroscopy was applied to discern the composition of carbonaceous materials for the ultimate purpose of identifying any graphenic additives.

Novel anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are constantly being explored to further improve battery performance. In this work, ReaxFF molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to model the early stages in the synthesis of nanostructured silicon carbide (SiC), which is one such promising material. The focus lies on its precursor, silicon oxycarbide glass of composition (SiOC) (17 mol% Si, 28 mol% O, and 54 mol% C), in the following referred to as SiOC.

We propose and demonstrate a data-driven plasmonic metascreen that efficiently absorbs incident light over a wide spectral range in an ultra-thin silicon film. By embedding a double-nanoring silver array within a 20 nm ultrathin amorphous silicon (a-Si) layer, we achieve a significant enhancement of light absorption. This enhancement arises from the interaction between the resonant cavity modes and localized plasmonic modes, requiring precise tuning of plasmon resonances to match the absorption region of the silicon active layer.
