Recently, it was reported that a thermocell can convert temperature into electrical energy by using the difference in the thermal coefficient (α ≡ dV/dT) of the redox potential (V) between the cathode and anode materials. Here, we systematically investigated α of NaxCo1-zMnz[Fe(CN)6]y (Co1-zMnz-PBA) against Mn concentration (z). The z-dependence of α is interpreted in terms of the 3d-electron configuration entropy (ΔS3d) of the redox site. Utilization of S3d is a strategy effective for the design of high-|α| materials for energy harvesting thermocells.

Knowledge of how extra-large-pore chiral zeolite asymmetric catalysts based on the -ITV framework imprint their chirality during a catalytic reaction is crucial in order to spread the scope for the catalytic enantioselective production of chiral compounds of interest. In this work, we have carried out a combined experimental and computational study on the catalytic activity of antipode GTM-3 catalysts during the ring-opening of -stilbene oxide with 1-butanol. Identification of the enantiomers of all the chiral species unraveled a surprising catalytic behavior: these chiral catalysts promote the transformation of one enantiomer of -stilbene oxide in the corresponding product (with inversion of configuration of the attacked C) via an S2 mechanism, and at the same time, the transformation of the other enantiomer of -stilbene oxide via an S1-like mechanism into the (with retention of configuration) and secondary products (diphenylacetaldehyde via rearrangement and derived products).

Beauveriolides, including the main beauveriolide I {systematic name: (3R,6S,9S,13S)-9-benzyl-13-[(2S)-hexan-2-yl]-6-methyl-3-(2-methylpropyl)-1-oxa-4,7,10-triazacyclotridecane-2,5,8,11-tetrone, CHNO}, are a series of cyclodepsipeptides that have shown promising results in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and in the prevention of foam cell formation in atherosclerosis. Their crystal structure studies have been difficult due to their tiny crystal size and fibre-like morphology, until now. Recent developments in 3D electron diffraction methodology have made it possible to accurately study the crystal structures of submicron crystals by overcoming the problems of beam sensitivity and dynamical scattering.

Designable Synthesis of Layered Silicates and Tunable Interlayer Expanded to Zeolites.

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Green Chemistry and Chemical Processes, School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, East China Normal University, North Zhongshan Rd. 3663, Shanghai, 200062, P. R. China.

Layered zeolitic silicates and corresponding interlayer-expanded porous materials exhibit attractive application potential in wide fields. Nonetheless, designable synthesis and structure analysis of layered silicates remain challenging. Herein, two kinds of layered silicates are synthesized using different di-quaternary ammonium-type organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs).
