Two differently protected aldehydes, A and B, were demonstrated to deprotect selectively through the application of light and heat, respectively. In the presence of iron(II) and a triamine, two distinct FeL cages, 1 and 2, were thus observed to form from the deprotected A and B, respectively. The alkyl tails of B and 2 render them preferentially soluble in cyclopentane, whereas A and 1 remain in acetonitrile. The stimulus applied (either light or heat) thus determines the outcome of self-assembly and dictates whether the cage and its ferrocene cargo remain in acetonitrile, or transport into cyclopentane. Cage self-assembly and cargo transport between phases can in this fashion be programmed using orthogonal stimuli.

Goals bias face perception.

J Exp Psychol Gen

January 2025

Department of Cognitive and Psychological Sciences, Brown University.

Faces-the most common and complex stimuli in our daily lives-contain multidimensional information used to infer social attributes that guide consequential behaviors, such as deciding who to trust. Decades of research illustrates that perceptual information from faces is processed holistically. An open question, however, is whether goals might impact this perceptual process, influencing the encoding and representation of the complex social information embedded in faces.

How does orientation-tuned normalization spread across the visual field?

J Neurophysiol

January 2025

Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Boston University, Boston, MA, 02215.

Visuocortical responses are regulated by gain control mechanisms, giving rise to fundamental neural and perceptual phenomena such as surround suppression. Suppression strength, determined by the composition and relative properties of stimuli, controls the strength of neural responses in early visual cortex, and in turn, the subjective salience of the visual stimulus. Notably, suppression strength is modulated by feature similarity; for instance, responses to a center-surround stimulus in which the components are collinear to each other are weaker than when they are orthogonal.

ConspectusStructural DNA nanotechnology offers a unique self-assembly toolbox to construct soft materials of arbitrary complexity, through bottom-up approaches including DNA origami, brick, wireframe, and tile-based assemblies. This toolbox can be expanded by incorporating interactions orthogonal to DNA base-pairing such as metal coordination, small molecule hydrogen bonding, π-stacking, fluorophilic interactions, or the hydrophobic effect. These interactions allow for hierarchical and long-range organization in DNA supramolecular assemblies through a DNA-minimal approach: the use of fewer unique DNA sequences to make complex structures.

What Factors Affect Binocular Summation?

Brain Sci

School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Bar-Ilan University, Ramat Gan 5290002, Israel.

Binocular vision may serve as a good model for research on awareness. Binocular summation (BS) can be defined as the superiority of binocular over monocular visual performance. Early studies of BS found an improvement of a factor of about 1.

The present study investigated the influence of emotional stimuli in the flanker task. In six experiments, separate influences of anticipating and reacting to valence-laden stimuli (affective pictures or facial expressions) on the flanker effect and its sequential modulation (also known as conflict adaptation) were examined. The results showed that there was little evidence that emotional stimuli influenced cognitive control when positive and negative stimuli appeared randomly during the flanker task.
