Choanal atresia (CA) is a relatively rare condition manifesting with respiratory distress. Endoscopic approaches have superseded transnasal and transpalatal approaches. We present a case of a premature baby of 1.10 kg, who developed respiratory distress and was diagnosed with bilateral CA. A nasal airway was created endoscopically using a skeeter drill.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term hearing outcomes in stapedotomy surgery using skeeter oto-drill and to assess safety in difficult situations.

Method: A retrospective study was conducted with 944 patients who underwent 1007 stapedotomy procedures over 16 years, performed by a single surgeon using a trans-canal approach and a self-retaining ear canal retractor. Hearing thresholds were calculated over four frequencies.

Congenital bilateral choanal atresia: an endoscopic approach with multi-flaps supported by neuronavigated CT.

BMJ Case Rep

Department of Adult and Development Age Human Pathology "Gaetano Barresi", Unit of Otorhinolaryngology, Universita degli Studi di Messina, Messina, Italy.

We present a case of a 2-month-old patient with CHARGE syndrome, cerebral haemorrhage and bilateral congenital choanal atresia (CCA). He was admitted to our otorhinolaryngology unit to solve his congenital bilateral choanal atresia proposing a transnasal endoscopic surgery. A study of CT of the skull showed that the air column was interrupted on both sides of nasal cavities; a nasal endoscopy with neonatology flexible optics showed the presence of a membrane and bony structure obstructing the passage into the nasopharynx.

Performing stapes surgery for otosclerosis is known to be potentially irreversibly harmful to the inner ear function in about 1% of the cases. An early postoperative transient depression of the bone conduction thresholds is frequently detected after stapes surgery. The purpose of this study was to compare the evolution of bone conduction thresholds after primary stapedotomy with two different techniques: skeeter versus CO(2) laser stapedotomy.
