Small-for-size syndrome is a clinical syndrome of early allograft dysfunction usually following living donor liver transplantation due to a mismatch between recipient metabolic and functional requirements and the graft's functional capacity. While graft size relative to the recipient size is the most commonly used parameter to predict risk, small-for-size syndrome is multifactorial and its development depends on a number of inter-dependant factors only some of which are modifiable. Intra-operative monitoring of portal haemodynamics and portal flow modulation is widely recommended though there is wide variation in clinical practice.

Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including coronary artery disease, ischemic heart disease, stroke, cardiomyopathy, and atrial fibrillation and flutter, are the leading cause of mortality worldwide, resulting in significant economic and health costs. Recognizing trends and geographical differences in the global burden of CVD facilitates health authorities in particular nations to assess the disease burden and forecast future epidemiological trends. Public health authorities in each country can better understand the differences in disease data and, by learning from the experiences and practices of successful countries and considering the characteristics of their diseases, allocate health resources more rationally and formulate more targeted healthcare strategies to reduce the disease burden.

We recently reported factors leading to different severity of ruminal pH drop in primiparous cows fed the same diet during transition and early lactation. The present study evaluates the effects of those severities on performance and several blood and balance parameters in the same 24 primiparous cows from 3 wk before calving until wk 10 in lactation. Dietary concentrate was increased for all cows from 32 before calving to 60% (DM basis) over the first wk in lactation, resulting in a diet with 40% non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC), and 14.
